    Great Bakery!
We stopped off at this bakery on our way from the black sand beach to the volcano park. Hubby and I split a ham sandwich and macaroni salad. We also each had one malasada. They have a lovely shaded eating area outside in the back of the bakery for customers. The service was prompt and the food was good. It was a great pitstop on a very busy day of sightseeing!
Aloha, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your positive experience at our bake shop! I'm delighted to hear that you and your husband enjoyed your ham sandwich, macaroni salad, and of course, our malasadas. It's wonderful to know that our outdoor eating area provided you with a comfortable and shaded spot to relax during your busy day of sightseeing. I appreciate your kind words about our prompt service. We strive to create a welcoming and efficient environment for all our customers, and it's fantastic to hear that we hit the mark during your visit. I hope your trip to the Black Sand Beach and Volcano Park was just as enjoyable. If you ever find yourselves back in the area, we'd be thrilled to serve you again. Everything was so good
We stopped here while on a tour. The smell from outside is so inviting. Inside are so many yummy desserts. We picked up a couple different types and our first time trying malasadas was not a disappointment. There is also a little souvenir area if you have time to look.

    Amazing Malasadas!
We stopped here on the way to Volcano National Park. Amazing does not even describe how good it was. So fresh, light, and fluffy, with the best filling I have ever had. We loved it so much we came back a 2nd time on our way to black sand beach. That day, there was live music playing outside.
Aloha RaggedyAnn_11, Mahalo for your glowing review! We're thrilled to hear that our malasadas exceeded your expectations and that you enjoyed them enough to stop by a second time! It’s wonderful to know that the freshness, lightness, and the quality of the filling made such a positive impression on you. We're also delighted that you got to experience the live music on your return visit, adding another layer of enjoyment to your experience at Punalu'u Bake Shop. It sounds like your visits were truly special moments during your travels. Thank you for choosing us on your journeys to Volcano National Park and the black sand beach. We look forward to welcoming you back for more malasadas and memorable moments the next time you're in the area. Warmest aloha, Zachary Kennedy General Manager

Delicious Malasadas at the Southernmost Bakery in the USA
I love bakeries so when we saw the sign for the Punalu'u Bake Shop on our way to the Volcano National Park, we turned around and stopped for donuts. The cases were filled with so many varieties of malasadas! The donuts we devoured included strawberry filled malasadas, chocolate Bismark malasadas, and plain malasadas. All tasted amazing! As we ate outside, we were serenaded by local musicians. What a fun experience!
Aloha 466alicef, Mahalo for your delightful review and for making the turn to visit Punalu'u Bake Shop! We're so pleased to hear that you enjoyed a variety of our malasadas and that the experience was enhanced by local music, making your stop not just delicious but truly memorable. It's always our goal to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for our guests, and we're thrilled that we could provide that for you. Thank you for appreciating the wide selection and the flavors of our baked goods. We look forward to welcoming you back the next time you're on the way to Volcano National Park or just craving some more malasadas. We'll be sure to have the music ready and the malasadas warm! Seriously Good Malasadas
We stopped here looking for something else and I almost turned around when my friend said “WAIT!” I’m sooo glad she did!! We ordered burgers and malasadas and could not have been more impressed with the malasadas!! The burgers were good, but Oh! My!! Gosh!!! Those malasadas were out of this world!! We happened to be there at the end of the day and they were even 50% off! We were in heaven!!
Aloha Corinna H, Mahalo for your fantastic review and for sharing the serendipitous stop at Punalu'u Bake Shop! We're thrilled to hear that the malasadas not only caught your attention but also impressed you so much. It sounds like they were a delightful discovery! We're glad you enjoyed the burgers as well, but it seems the malasadas truly made your visit memorable, especially with that sweet end-of-day deal. We love when our guests can experience a little bit of heaven in our shop! Thank you again for your kind words. We look forward to welcoming you back for more malasadas, burgers, and perhaps more surprises that leave you impressed! Warmest aloha, Zachary Kennedy General Manager

A delicious stop on the way to Volcanoes
We stopped here for a treat on our way to HVNP and had no regrets. The malasadas are delicious and packed nicely to go. We took ours to the nearby black sand beach for a picnic snack. The wait is a bit long but that is because everyone loves this place!
Aloha Dolphin0831, Mahalo for stopping by Punalu'u Bake Shop on your way to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and for sharing your experience! We're thrilled that you enjoyed our malasadas and that they made for a perfect picnic snack at the nearby black sand beach. We appreciate your patience with the wait time; indeed, it can get busy, but we're glad to hear it was worth it. Thank you for understanding and for your kind words. We look forward to your next visit, hopefully making it just as enjoyable, if not more! Warmest aloha, Zachary Kennedy General Manager

    Non-negotiable Stop _ DvB
This is my fourth or fifth time visiting the bakery. Each time, I enjoy familiar placement of items and comfortable preservation of almost all aspects. Embracing the continuity and consistency, you find delicious malasadas, jams, dry mixes, and baked goods of all types. While there isn't much around the bakery, the post office is close, and food/coffee trucks have been immediately off-site each time I have visited. Remember to check your jams/ preserves for the security theater. Each of us thought the other had moved the jars into the checked bags, only to have $26 in local honey and $22 in macadamia oil confiscated. Prices were reasonable at the bakery, so we still left with a decent selection of dried goods. You won't be disappointed. Maybe stop by on your way to the southernmost point for snacks.
Aloha Kaiser_D, Mahalo for your continued patronage and for sharing your experiences at Punalu'u Bake Shop! We're thrilled to hear that you appreciate the familiarity and consistency of our offerings. It's wonderful to know that our malasadas, jams, dry mixes, and other baked goods continue to delight you with each visit. We're glad that the location, despite being somewhat isolated, provides additional conveniences like nearby food and coffee options, as well as the post office. Your tip about the security procedures for jams and preserves is invaluable for other travelers, and we appreciate you bringing it to attention. Thank you for recommending us as a must-stop on the way to the southernmost point of the island. We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit, hopefully making it just as enjoyable as the previous ones. Warmest aloha, Zachary Kennedy General Manager

A must stop if you like donuts!
What a great spot for coffee and delicious donuts! We stopped here on our way to the green sand beach. It’s the southern most bakery in the US! We met a lovely lady, Nora, who works there, while we were at the green sand beach. Her husband, Dangerous Don, is the best driver hands down at the green sand beach. Be sure to ask for him if you go there. But, back to the donuts! Delicious! You could probably share one with someone - they are pretty big and sweet! If you get a chance to stop in, absolutely do!
Aloha Adventure32238215433, Mahalo for your wonderful review! We're delighted that you enjoyed your visit to Punalu'u Bake Shop and found our donuts delicious along with our coffee. It's great to hear that you had such a positive encounter with Nora and got to meet her husband, Dangerous Don, during your adventures! We're proud to be known as the southernmost bakery in the U.S., and we're thrilled that we could provide a tasty stop on your way to the green sand beach. Thank you for recommending our donuts and for sharing your experience. We look forward to welcoming you back for more sizable and sweet treats the next time you're in the area. Best Malasadas on the Big Island
When I was planning my trip to the Big Island, I kept seeing this place pop up over and over again. Well guys, it is definitely worth the stop, especially if you're visiting South Point Park or the black sand beach nearby. The guava malasada was incredible. Also we had lunch there and it was so damn good. Really great place and worth the wait!

    Yummy fresh baked bread
We enjoyed our time here. The fresh baked bread is wonderful. We tried the fresh bread, the hamburgers, and the malasadas. The bread was sooooo soft. The hamburgers were good because the buns were fresh and soft. We tried several flavors of the malasadas. Personal favorite - the apple malasada. This bake shop is in the southern part of the island, but definitely worth a trip.

This is a tough one to review, as I see pros and cons to this restaurant. I'll lay it out here.

Pros: a great option if on the southern part of the Big Island (there frankly aren't many other options!); the food was very tasty; it was fun to mix-in some sweets (their donut-style pastries are made fresh and are amazing!); everything there seems to be fresh and made in-house; the outdoor seating is plentiful and clean.

Opportunities for improvement: the prices seem unfairly high (clearly they have the Trip Advisor mojo going, and there are few other choices around, but they seem to be price-gouging quite a bit); it was packed when we were there mid-week in July at 1pm (it took 30 minutes to get an order placed, and then 20 minutes to get our food).

The ladies working are super sweet. We bought all different kinds of malasadas to share. All were yummy especially the Bismark ones. We also had a burger, hot dog, hamburger steak. All were yummy. Of course the buns were the best. The sweet hawaiin bread smells amazing as you walk up to this place. Highly recommend.

Our $10 pre-packaged garden salad came with no dressing. The $7 2-scoop ice cream was tiny. Half the ice cream flavors were out; remainders mislabeled. Service was rude.
