Great tour, great guide! Highly recommend!
The tour was so amazing! Mo gave us lots of background info to help us understand the geology and history of the area before taking us into the cave to explore. Highly recommend this tour when you are visiting the Big Island!

    Fantastic Lave Tube Tour!
We did the 2 hour tour and I'm so glad we did more than just the Lighted Tour! Brian was a fantastic guide, very funny and knowledgeable of the tubes. He answered any and all questions and provided a lot of great information during the tour. Would highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to get a deeper experience on the lava tubes and is physically able!

    Excellent tour!
Definitely one of the best activities we’ve booked here in Hawaii. Our guide, Mo, was very knowledgeable and we learned more than we expected. We booked the one hour tour which was actually longer after reviewing the topography map before the actual cave tour.

History of Valcano's and the cave system!
The caves were incredibly diverse and they had everything light up very nice. It was fascinating and fun. My husband and I did the 2 hour tour and I'm glad we did. We got to dive deeper in the caves. This is definitely worth trip, you won't regret it!

Wow!!! The best way to learn about volcanoes on Big Island!!
Me and my 11 year old son did the 2 hour tour, which ended up lasting nearly 3 hours. The first 30 minutes was above ground explanation and review of the volcanolgy of Hawaii detailing the various lava flows over time and how that shaped the island. For me it was a great overview about the various volcanos of the Big Island. There is an amazing geologic map of the various lava flows that was fascinating. Then the underground tour, the bulk of your time. Unlike prior cave tours I’ve done (and not really enjoyed), this one was not smelly and claustrophobic. This was an extensive exploration of the lava tube system under south Kona. This was a science based tour exploring the volcanology, geology, archeology, and biology of the lava tube system. Our tour guide Moe is clearly a lava tube enthusiast and took joy sharing all he knows about the lava tubes with us. This is a great tour for anyone that enjoys science and learning. The 2 hour tour is fabulous if you love science. If you have kids with shorter attention spans then do one of the shorter tours. My 11 year old remained engaged the entire 2+ hours but all kids may not. My kid was so stoked after this tour! We HIGHLY recommend for an educational break from the hot windy beaches, esp if you’re traveling from Kona to Volcanoes National Park.

    Great experience.!!!
The Kona Kai caverns were amazing. I learned so much about the volcanoes, the lava tubes, the island and the natives from the tour. Moe, our guide was so informative. He didn’t lose my interest for one second. If you’re in Hawaii, the Kona Kai caverns are a must. Loved it..!!!

    Spectacular!
Mo, our excellent guide walked (and crawled) our way through the geology, anthropology, and history of the lava tubes with exceptional skill and knowledge (and humor), and with a delight born of his own evident curiosity. On an island with no shortage of spectacles, this was our family’s most memorable experience. Don’t skimp—take the “Two Hour” tour, if able (and plan for three). You’ll not regret it. Perfect.

    Best Lava Tubes Tour Ever
The tour of the lava tubes exceeded all my expectations. Mo was a great teacher and guide. We learned about the geology of the tubes and their importance to the Hawaiian people. Mo interest and enthusiasm are the tour great. This was the highlight of our trip. We took the hour tour which was more like 2 hours.

Amazing and Memorable! A MUST DO!
Definitely one of the most memorable things I’ve done in my life! I’m so glad we did the extended tour, it was 100% worth it! We got to do a deeper dive into the cave, and had to climb and crawl through multiple areas. Amazing! And our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and clearly has a passion for what he does. How come not many people know about this place!? It’s a MUST! I forgot to take pics in the climbing and crawling area 🤦🏼‍♀️ I was very focused lol

Guide was knowledgeable but long winded
Mo was our, shall we say, enthusiastic, tour guide. These lava tubes/caves were very cool but our 2 hour tour quickly ran to 3 + hours. 2 other groups bailed after about 90 minutes and I wish I had. Mo told us not what we needed to know but everything HE knew. This would have been 5 stars if it was a 60-90 minute tour.

We signed up for the 2 hour tour of these lava tubes. WOW! Gary was a fantastic guide! Gary was thoroughly knowledgeable about the geology, geography, science and culture of the caves. He is a wealth of knowledge and these caves are incredibly interesting. Our 2 hour tour turned into a 4 hour tour as we were the last tour and all of us (guide included) were enjoying ourselves. The more you engage, the more information you get. Don't short yourselves time. Gary tends to run a little behind schedule, but the wait is worth it. He is a foodie too, so ask him the best local places to eat and he will share. We highly recommed this tour! Don't forget to tip Gary. It's well worth it!

We booked an archeology tour of the lava tube, which far exceeded our expectations. Mark was our guide, a highly knowledgeable spelunker who over many years had explored the Kula Kai lava tubes as well as hundreds of others around the island. Mark first introduced us to the history of volcanic eruptions and lava flows on Big Island, and then we headed down into the cave itself. Back in history, Hawaiians had collected drinking water in the cave, and we found remains of gourds used for this purpose. We saw remnants of shells, animal bones and sleeping areas carved out of the lava, and Mark discussed the lives of people who had spent time in the cave hundreds/thousands of years ago. It was a fascinating tour with an incredible guide! This is the only lava tube site on the island that has government permits to offer tours, and it is a wonderful way to experience an underground world. I strongly recommend Kula Kai Caverns' tours to all!

We visited here on a recent trip to Kona and really enjoyed the short lighted walking tour of the lava tube/cave. Our guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. I'd recommend to anyone in the area to learn more about the aftermath of a volcano.

We took the 2 hour tour and were glad we extended beyond the "Lighted Trail". The tunnels/ tubes are quite amazing and interesting. Pretty fascinating as well.

However, I gave 3 stars because when I called and inquired about the tour the information I received to my questions was not an accurate reflection of the tour, rigorous expectations and the safety of my higher end camera. If these answers had provided accurate information, I could have used my limited time on the Hawaiian Island more aligned with my intentions of the island. I do feel I was responded to in an manner to just "get the booking". It is now 5 days since the tour and I'm still angered and disgusted by this.

Kula Kai Caverns (lava tubes) is a great excursion choice for all different ages and adventure levels. We booked this tour “day of” and as our vacation was winding down. Not knowing what to expect, my wife and I chose the one hour tour which is the most basic of the tours available. Our cavern excursion required the ability to climb/descend a total of one flight of stairs and less than 1/4mi of walking. Our guide Gary was perfect, he was very knowledgeable and funny. We learned a lot and had a great time doing so.

We will definitely be back to visit Gary at Kula Kai Caverns and this time we will bring the kids and maybe book one of the more advanced tours that involve some crawling (Gary provides gloves, knee pads, and helmets w/lights for these advanced tours).

PS...when you book this tour plan on visiting Punalu’u Bakery (the southernmost bakery in the United States). And also Punalu’u Black Sands Beach for a chance to visit Sea Turtles. FYI: The bakery is less than a 30 minute drive from Kula Kai Caverns. Black Sands Beach is about a 15 minute drive from the bakery.

We talked to Gary who set up our tour - he is so fun to talk with! We chose the 2 hour tour and it was amazing - you won't want to miss this! Our guide, Nica, was super!!! She was very informative and fun as she guided us throughout the cavern. We felt very safe and were amazed by the underground formations and bits of history left behind. This was the highlight to our 2 week stay in Kona/Hila and we highly recommend it. The lighted trail tour was part of this tour at the beginning and that is fantastic as well if you have limited time.

A really cool mini history lesson of how the lava caves are formed and lots of interesting facts and stories shared as you walk through these truly awesome caves. We are so glad we experienced this. You do need to be able to walk over some rocks (it’s well lit) and climb up a ladder stair case at the end…so Fun! Thank you Mark for a great and informative session; also learning more about the various regions and development of the island was a bonus! Mahalo!

This was such an interesting experience. We booked the two hour tour. Brian started by explaining where the tubes are located and how they formed and then fitted us all with gear and off we went. The first part is on a flat well lit path. The second part is in the dark but we had 9 people on our tour all with headlights so it really didn’t seem that dark. The surface is a little rough for walking. We did crawl through one section. Overall it was absolutely fascinating and like nothing we’ve ever done. After the tour Brian gave us some great advice about other things to see and do on the island. He also took a bunch of pictures for us and sent them to me right away. We really enjoyed this experience!
