About
In 1984 Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden opened its doors to the world showcasing one man’s vision, the vision that he could truly make a difference in the world. Dan Lutkenhouse believed that if you took care of the land, the land would take care of the planet. He worked very hard to preserve the natural topography of the land and the native artifacts within the garden. Today, 40 years later HTBG is a thriving nonprofit botanical garden, with paved trails that wind through 17 acres touching the ocean, filled with beauty and adventure around every corner. Located in Onomea Bay we are dedicated to tropical plants, education, preservation of the rainforest, and the propagation of endangered flora and fauna species. We are located at 27-717 Old Mamalahoa Hwy on the Big Island of Hawaii and open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, last admission 4:00 PM.

- Samantha TLongview, Washington25 contributionsDon’t balk at the price, so worth it!This was the most amazing botanical garden I have ever been to! Beforehand, I wasn’t sure about paying $30 per person but it was well worth it. There was so much to see, we could have spent all day. I was ecstatic to even find pitcher plants, which I was not expecting at all!!Mahalo for visiting the Garden. - Lisa JPlant City, Florida960 contributionsHawaii Tropical Botanical GardenThis is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever been to. It has flowers of corse but it also has shoreline, waterfalls, a koi pond, and a bit of history. If you love orchids this is the place, they have thousands of them, along with other beautiful flowers and very large unusual trees. The shoreline is stunning, you can sit and enjoy and listen to the waves crash on the rocks. My husband usually lets me go through gardens even though he is not so interested, but he really enjoyed it also and I think he took as many pictures as I did. Its all paved or board walks so it is very disabled friendly. They also have a gift shop where you can get water and bug spray, although we did not need any. Maybe the bugs are worse in the summer.I think we're doing something right if your husband (who isn't interested in Gardens) took as much photos as you did! Beautiful flora and well kept with waterfall view and rocky shore view. Glad we stopped and enjoyed the self guided paved walk.Yes, the Boardwalk can be very steep however, benches and handrails are in place to help our guests. So many flowers and plants to see. Had doubts about going but it was quite the place to see. Wear good walking shoes. Trail is paved but up and down walk to and from the ocean. Medium size parking lot and this is off the main road. Gift shop and restrooms at the entrance. General admission is $30. Seemed high but I can't imagine what it takes to keep this place up. Glad we came.Mahalo for visiting the Garden. The Garden itself is in the middle of the tropical rainforest on the 4-mile scenic route. What makes the Garden even more special is that it is situated on a valley with ocean views. - Q ChenSan Francisco, California155 contributionsRich garden with something for everyoneThis is a lovely place with so many flowering plants. There were also many interesting-looking trees of all shapes and sizes. We were especially amazed by how strange the Cannonball tree looked. Although most plants are not native, we still appreciate the concentration of them in one place. We were also entertained by the cute little lizards and beautiful Monarch butterflies. It was easy to navigate since it was almost just one way in and out. The garden offered different sceneries: waterfall, ocean coast, rainforest, ponds etc. Once we learned how the founder spent 40 years creating this place, we had a lot of respect for the results we got to enjoy. This is definitely worth a visit while in Hilo.Mahalo for visiting the Garden. The Garden truly has something to offer for all ages! We're glad you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again soon! And it’s set up to look as of it’s been there forever, not just planted. Several beautiful waterfalls that are straight out of pictures. Nice walking surface. Parts are fairly steep, ends up down by the ocean with so many picture spots.Mahalo for visiting the Garden! - CADallas, Texas786 contributionsPretty flowers and walk by the ocean5 stars because all the plants and flowers are so beautiful. We weren’t there long. Just enough to walk through and see everything once. Parking was a little difficult. We had to wait for someone to leave to get a spot. There was an employee in the parking lot helping. They sell individual mosquito wipes in the little shop where you pay admission. It’s a good idea to have something on.Mahalo for visiting the Garden! - Ke D154 contributionsBeautiful place!!!This really is such an amazing place. We’re from a cold climate, and botanical gardens near us are inside to mimic the rainforest experience. This actually is a rainforest, with nicely paved paths winding through with blooming plants everywhere, towering trees, and part of it is on the ocean. There were some stairs in a couple parts, but most areas would be easily navigated with a stroller. There seemed to be a lot of people there, but it didn’t feel like it because there are so many paths to meander through. There’s a nice visitor’s center/ gift shop with bathrooms, and there was a restroom in the garden, too, so you don’t have to walk back up the path if you have to go. You can take in your own snacks and drinks, in case you stay a few hours like we did and need to eat something! I really wish I could have captured more in photos how impressive this place felt. We love gardens but I think even non-plant-people would really enjoy exploring here. It actually felt worth the $30 per person entrance fee for us.Mahalo for visiting the Garden. The Garden truly feels like a walk through the jungle! Absolutely beautiful garden filled with a variety of plant-life. The walk itself is steep at some points but manageable with good walking shoes and some water. Would recommend going in the morning before it begins to get crowded around 11am. Love everything from the waterfalls, ocean-side walk, and fern-circle!

Mahalo for visiting the Garden. The best time to visit the Garden is when we open at 9 am. It's quiet, peaceful, and you'll hear the birds sing and ocean waves crashing! We're glad you enjoyed your visit and we hope to see you again soon!

The walking paths through this tropical bioreserve reveal so many faces of the rainforest. It’s a steep climb at the beginning and end, but well worth it. From orchids and bromeliads to huge canopies of trees and ferns, you are enveloped in the beauty of nature in this large garden.
We arrived late in the afternoon so had to scurry past Lily Lake to see the section near the ocean before it closed at 4:30 pm. We still had time to cover the trails and see the waterfalls.
The $25 fee seems expensive but you’re contributing to the preservation of a unique habitat and seed collection. It’s definitely worth the price.

This is a hidden gem about 20 minutes from Hilo. We've been several times on our visits to the Big Island and love the safe, paved pathways that allow everyone to go deep into the native Hawaiian rainforest setting. There are sooooo many incredible plants, trees, and flowers unlike anything you'll usually find elsewhere. Plus, at the bottom of their loop trail, you will get amazing views and photos of the Big Island's rocky cliff shores from right down by the ocean. Their entry tickets are quite expensive though, which is why they get 4 instead of 5 stars.

We live in Hilo and have the same plants in our yard. Took our visiting family here and found the $30 visitor fee excessive. These same relatives visited the Gardens many years ago and wanted to go back. They were disappointed mainly because of the price. In addition, the steep walkway down has dangerous slippery areas even in dry weather. Our sleeping grandson had to be removed from his stroller and carried. The mother and baby almost fell on one of these slippery spots. The public path that they don't want you on is far less dangerous than this steep walkway. The public path may not be part of the Garden experience, but what harm is it to the Garden for visitors to walk down to the water? If it is so dangerous, the county would block it off like they did to the old trail down to boiling pots. We were all wearing wristbands to show that we paid the admission.

Aloha, thank you for your feedback. We apologize that you were disappointed with your visit to the Garden.
With a membership, your guests would receive the Kamaaina rate instead of the regular $30 admission fee. When it rains, the Boardwalk can get slippery, we recommend our guests to wear proper footwear regardless of the weather. The public path is part of the Na Ala Hele Trail System. The admission covers the self-guided tour of the Garden only.
We hope we're able to clarify this blunder and if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at GuestServices@HTBG.com. Mahlo.

This was one of the most amazing and beautiful botanical gardens I've ever visited. It contains orchids, anthuriums, colocasia (elephant ears), lilies, gingers, banana plants, Tillandsia cyanea (pink quill) and many, many more. The koi pond is huge, the paths clear and easy to navigate. However, the boardwalk down to the garden is very steep and the paths contain steps so it's not suitable for mobility devices. We spent several very enjoyable hours exploring the waterfalls, admiring the tikis, and artifacts like the Portuguese wood burning oven and hand carved canoe.

The price to enter is now $25 pp and quite expensive for what it is. We were five adults and spent a fortune on this place, which I feel you can see all these plants on the island in different locations. The Panewa zoo which is by donation is a much better option to choose over this place IMO.

Thank you for visiting the garden. The admission fee helps us fulfill our commitment to conservation of tropical plant life and preservation of Onomea bay. Eventually, to educate the importance of sustainability for all. Mahalo!

This is probably the most beautiful botanical garden we have ever visited. Not only are the plants attractive, there is a waterfall, a stream, and several views of the ocean.
However, I am deducting one star for 2 reasons. First is the high admission fee of $30 per person. Second, after we finished our visit to the botanical garden, we had planned to take a quick peek at the Donkey Trail 1000 feet away. When we began to head for the trail, a garden employee told me that we needed to move our car to hike the trail. This is after we had paid $120 to visit!

Aloha Matthew,
Mahalo and we appreciate your feedback. The public trails around the Garden are part of the state's Na Ala Hele Trail and is not part of the Garden. We hope you understand that the Garden and the public trail are two separate entities — one nonprofit and the other, state trail.
Mahalo and we hope to see you again soon.

This bio reserve was impressive. Even more so when you realize the original owner started clearing it in his late 50's! Everything was so lush; I felt truly immersed in a rainforest. Lots of signs to help you ID the tropical plants and some Hawaiian history/culture mixed in. A must-see for any gardener or tropical plant lover. The walk back up the boardwalk is a challenge, but they have resting benches.

Our visit to the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden was absolutely magical and beautiful! The gardens are breathtaking and so exciting to explore. I would definitely recommend allotting around 3 hours for a visit in order to take full advantage of the gardens and to take your time wandering. We also brought a picnic lunch along with us which I HIGHLY recommend doing. There are several benches and picnic tables located throughout the garden with views better than any restaurant you could find. Ask the attendant for recommendations for your party when purchasing tickets (probably best for parties of 4 or less). It was our favorite meal of the whole trip just because of how peaceful and beautiful our environment was! Definitely include HTBG in your itinerary.

Stunningly beautiful botanical gardens. It was a long drive from Kona to this destination, but totally worth it. In November, many of the blooms had passed their peak, but the foliage alone was breathtaking. The waterfalls were gorgeous, too. Highly recommend!

Written September 21, 2024
Ixora, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Yuca (Izote), Yellow and Pink Oleander, Royal Poinciana, Frangipani, Orchid Trees, Aloe Vera, Kalanchoe, Lantana, some cacti and some orchids are all blooming on the Big Island now in December 2024. Lots of whales to spot, too!

My wife and I could’ve done it if we had one stroller. More than one would be tough because of the steps and one adult couldn’t do it. Yes, the first part of the walk is steep but not too steep if you are able-bodied.

Which is better, this garden or the World Botanical Garden which is a,few miles away?
Written November 24, 2018
We have only been to the Hawaii Tropical Garden so can't compare it to the World Botanical Garden. What I can tell you is that we absolutely loved the HTG and spent far more time there than we expected because it was so beautiful and there was so much to see. It's also interesting that we never even heard of the WBG. We talked to many locals on our trip and everyone unanimously recommended the HTG as a must see and so we decided to go. We were not disappointed at all.

Hi, Nancy. What would you like to know about this attraction? We are excited about coming in November on a Cruise Ship for just one day. Do we need to make reservations ahead of time? We will need a golf cart as we are aged 87 and 81 and don't walk long distances. Anything else we need to know? Thanks. Nancy Hawaii.

I would definitely call and find out. If I would have brought my sister whom has partial no mobility on the right side of her body I know this walk down the steep path would have been super dangerous for her walking or on a wheelchair. With that being said I did not find out how and if people could be transported down. I do know I wouldn’t even attempt to bring down a stroller because of how steep the path is. Definitely give them a call :)

Rain is common near Hilo. You can't let that prevent you from seeing things in Hawaii or you will never go outside. Rain usually doesn't last all day. Just be prepared.

We would like to visit in the next couple of days. We are staying in Kailua-Kona, the GPS on my IPhone says it takes about 2hours to get there. The garden website says something about it taking 3 hours from Kailua-Kona. Does this discrepancy reflect the info on the website being outdated a bit, or is it more accurate than my IPhone?
Written February 10, 2018
Your iPhone is more accurate. The road across the island has been updated and makes travel much faster. Use the Senator Inouye Road to cross back and forth from west to east and back.
You might want to use this same road to hike a couple of trails on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The first is the highest mountain in the world and the second is the largest (mass) mountain on the island.
TIP: If you can find the picture book on the gardens, buy it, read it, and use it as a guide in the gardens. We bought it afterward and are glad to have it but wished we had read it prior to out visit.
Happy trails.

I think that we took over 2 hours, but we stopped along the way to enjoy other aspects of that coast. The road over is much faster now than it was previously, and they’ve cut out a portion that made the trip longer. Enjoy!!!
