Description:

Chocolate From Branch to Bar begins with a stroll through the Steelgrass...

Chocolate From Branch to Bar begins with a stroll through the Steelgrass gardens, winding among groves of rare black bamboo, tropical flowers, and exotic fruit trees. The focus of the three-hour tour is on chocolate, but you will also experience dozens of exotic plants and flowers, and taste the tropical fruits that are in season as your guides share our family's vision for creating sustainable diversified agriculture on Kauai.Soon we reach the chocolate orchard, where you'll see chocolate trees at all stages of growth, often bearing tiny blossoms that will develop into seed-filled cacao pods. We then move into our chocolate tasting tent, and you sit comfortably in the shade while we demonstrate the many steps involved in processing raw cacao into nibs and then finished chocolate. Cacao is recognized as a powerful health food; as you taste the way fermentation and sun-drying transform the seed's flavor precursors into the rich chocolate we all love, your guide will explain chocolate's antioxidant and other health benefits. Best of all, you’ll enjoy an eleven-course dark chocolate tasting, where you sample rare and delicious chocolates grown and made in Hawaii and all over the world, including Kallari and Republica del Cacao from Ecuador, Valrhona from Madagascar and Trinidad, Guittard from Peru, Santander from Colombia, Felchlin and Taza from the Dominican Republic. You’ll also learn chocolate’s history, from its first discovery by early Meso-American tribes, to its revered status as a divine plant in the Olmec, Mayan and Aztec cultures, to its introduction to Europe in the 1600’s, and finally how an American inventor, Milton Snavely Hershey, made the nickel Hershey bar (1905) and the Hershey’s kiss (1907) enduring American institutions. Our Chocolate from Branch to Bar tour runs from 9AM to noon, and is offered Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Advance reservations are required. Cost for the tour is $60 per person, and children 12 years and under attend free of charge. Steelgrass Farm is located on Kauai's East Side, in the foothills above the town of Kapaa. Once your reservation is confirmed, we will send you written driving directions to the Farm. The Tour is handicapped accessible, and since chocolate trees love moisture, we operate rain or shine.

We have been coming to Kauai for 5 years. We learned about this tour on Captain Andy's Sailing Tour to the Na Pali Coast. The lady told us it was the best experience she had been to on Kauai and we totally agree. Both Will (an owner) and Andrea (the tour guide) are exceptional. We learned much about Kauai and... More

Enjoyed the beautiful setting on this working farm. Tasted many local fruits in season, walked along a pathway outlined with palms, orchids, bamboo and papyrus finally seeng the cacoa trees, the pods fully visiible. Tasted the bean right out of the pod, saw the equipment and process to finally taste the nibs. Then the fun of tasting 11 varieties of... More

After we finally found you we had a most pleasant time, not just seeing and learning about chocolate, but learning and sampling those wild fruits. Great guide who kept us on our toes with her great witty remarks and educational fun.

This was our second time on the tour and it was even more wonderful than the first tour. Love Andrea-best tour guide in Kauai! Would suggest having a list of the fruits tasted so we can remember them :) We will be back!

When you walk in and are greeted by Andrea. You feel the amazing vibe the place has. What a tour. We saw an orchid fertilized. My six year old daughter was in heaven with all of the different fruit we ate. The chocolate tasting was spectacular. This is a great tour. Can't say enough about it.

What a unique and extremely interesting tour!! Will the owner greeted everyone warmly. Amazingly, he and the tour guide Andrea remembered the names of everyone on the tour. Andrea was so vivacious, knowledgeable, friendly and anxious to share as much information with the guests as she could. We learned so much about a variety of fruits that we didn't know... More

Our morning tour of Steelgrass was fun, educational and delicious. We were part of a mixed group of couples and families; some kids were under 6, and the tour was too long for them. We enjoyed walking through farm areas, tasting fruit, learning about the plants, and finally tasting chocolate. Andrea and Will did a great job introducing and leading... More

As far as the tour itself goes I have no complaints. The chocolate and fruit was delicious, the portion of the farm you see is beautiful and exotic, and both Andrea and Will were impressive founts of information, as well as energetic and fun. There isn't a whole lot of walking, but it does involve a very steep hill. The... More

Will and Andrea were very knowledgeable and made the tour so fun. It got off to a slow start, but it was fun to hear about their backgrounds and to sample so many tropical fruits grown right there. We loved getting to try the cacao bean straight from the tree, too. The ultimate experience was the blind chocolate tasting. We... More
