Intimate service with inspirational message

The priest, ministers, and parishioners are friendly and welcoming. The priest gives a "shout out" at the end of mass to those celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. It is a beautiful blend of the local Hawaiian culture and the Catholic mass.

Visited during Christmas light festival. Enjoyed very much. Property, chapel and church was well maintained and I felt safe walking through the areas in the evening.

The oldest Catholic Church in Hawaii. Beautiful place. Nice grounds. Out of the way on a dead end road but easy to get to.

Nothing particularly special about the place...

...in my opinion. I'm thinking maybe I should give it a better than an average rating because God deserves extra points. I'm trying to be objective though. It is an old and interesting-looking church I guess. Nothing particularly ornate about it. I think it has only one piece of stained glass. Even the Stations of the Cross were kind of just simple painted white wooden crosses. I didn't see another soul here. What was most intriguing was a little minature church building near the modern residence. It look like it was either for dwarfs or midgets or elves maybe children. I've been kind of wondering about it.

A blessed place to visit and pray
Jul. 2018 • Family
We visited Hawaii for our 2018 summer family vacation, visiting the Big Island, Oahu, and Kauai. All were very nice and we had a great time.

On Sunday, on Kauai, we celebrated Mass at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

After Mass, as we looked around Church, we met a lady. As we talked, we learned that the first Church on Kauai was this Church, Saint Raphael.

The Archangels are special to us a) because of who they are and b) because our son is born on their feast day. That this church in Koala is named for them is a nice coincidence and blessing.

------------

Raphael is the Archangel one of the seven Archangels who stand before the throne of our Lord, and one of only three mentioned by name in the bible.

His feast day is celebrated with archangels St. Michael and St. Gabriel on September 29.

Raphael appears in human form in the book of Tobit, and he heals Tobit' blindness and brings him together with Sarah. The Gospel of John mentions people visiting the healing water of Bethesda, which is watched by an archangel thought to be St. Raphael, the healer.

We understood from talking with the lady at Immaculate Conception that St. Raphael was chosen for this first church because he is associated with fishing, which was very important to Hawaiians since the first arrived in the islands.

------------

The Church is about 3/4 of a mile from Pizetta's and the other shops and restaurants in Koala, so it is a very short drive.

We stayed and prayed and looked around for a few minutes. It was a good peaceful visit.

There is a statue of St. Raphael who was holding a fish there, and a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, too.

We are glad we visited and are sure you will enjoy your visit, too.

They have two churches the "old" church and the "new" church, definitely two different experiences. The Old is traditional and new open and airy. Loved the service, at the end recognized and blessed birthdays and anniversaries. Also blessed first time visitors for a successful return home.

Wonderful Mass and People

Wow, 15 people with instruments and singing; open air front to the church and windows open all around; so many friendly people. The grounds are beautiful. Blessed to have gone to Mass twice there.

To take a walk around the gardens was sheer joy - so serene. The old (& new) church was calm - and it’s replica, in the gardens, was a wonderful surprise too. A hidden gem.
