NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

We had a choice of the formal gardens or the natural ones. We did not have a lot of time and chose the natural ones, the McBryde Gardens. The bus driver was very knowledgeable and gave a great narration both on the ride out and the one back. The maps were very good and it was easy to find your... More

We really loved this tour. It was pricey but so interesting and so pretty. Our guide, Soren, did an excellent job. He had so many interesting facts and stories about the people and the plants of the garden. He eagerly answered our questions. You could tell that he had a genuine love and appreciation for the gardens. I would highly... More

We left our children and grandchildren to take in the sights of the beautiful Allerton Gardens. It was well worth the $60/per person fee. We are not tour people but you self guide in these gardens. We went on a 2 1/2 hour tour with a well informed and fun guide. You begin in a tour bus opposite the Spouting... More

We decided to try the tour and evening dinner in the Allerton house on a Friday evening. Our guide was great and friendly. It was a small group so we had lots time to ask questions. The tour was lovely but the dinner, which was catered, was very good. It is a little pricey but we realized that we were... More

Worth spending a few hours here ... gorgeous grounds and interesting to learn about the native species of plants. Great exhibits and you can't take a bad photo here! They have an evening dinner (by reservation only) that I would love to do next time!

This Society includes 5 different gardens... two at this location... McBryde and Allerton gardents with 5 different tours... including a do it on your own hiking tour. Only society vehicles are allowed within the gardens... (thus the hiking tour fee). We took the "discovery" tour which covered the highlights of the 2 gardens located here as well as the propogation... More

This is a trip to take and see all the different types of plants and how they interact. The display and setting are a must see. I am not a plant guy, so this was a shock on how it was planned out and done to make this happen. A lot of movies were filmed here. Take about two hrs... More

I've been to NTGB before but this was the first time with guide Juan Meyers. There is so much to appreciate here. Juan told us about the fascinating history of the founders and how they intertwined their love of art and architecture with the flow of plants and water to come together creating a place like no other. Juan's depth... More

We took the combination tour of McBryde and Allerton Gardens. A highlight of our stay on Kauai. See my more complete review under McBryde Gardens.
