About
NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

We had a great time with the “Best of Both “ tour. Our guide was funny and knowledgeable. The sights were beautiful. Everything ran on time and very smoothly. Well worth it for such a lovely experience.

Book the Allerton Sunset Tour!
Sep. 2021 • Family
My family had a really enjoyable time taking Ron’s Allerton sunset tour. The food was really good and you can sit anywhere around Allerton’s house. You can even go to the beach there too.
Ron is so knowledgeable and fun, and my teenage sons were really into the tour too cause he kept it engaging. I highly recommend it! I have gone in 2018 for just the Allerton Garden tour but it was worth the extra bucks to take the sunset tour. Bonus was all you can eat starfruit before the tour departed cause they had so many to be picked, they were giving them away! Yummy!

Beautiful experience!

We did the Best of Both Worlds Tour of highlights of both the Allerton Gardens and McBride Gardens. Our tour guide, Sam, was awesome and an excellent photographer! The tour is partly on a bus and partly walking in certain areas. It rains regularly throughout the area, so they are always stocked with clear umbrellas for everyone so you can still enjoy the walking portions of the tour even if there’s a slight drizzle. We enjoyed the slight rain as we walked! It was so refreshing and beautiful!!! It was wonderful to see the gardens in all their lush beauty including a secluded little waterfall and the giant fig trees that were used in the Jurassic Park films. And Sam made it entertaining the entire way through!

More garden, less tour guide jokes
Aug. 2021
Beautiful park with gorgeous landscapes. But an underwhelming tour. Three areas of feedback:
1) For $60 pp, we should be able to spend more time in the gardens. The walking tour felt fairly leashed, and rushed. We were hurried along and not really given adequate time to explore, which is why one visits Botanical Gardens. Also less driving and more walking!
2) Less tour guide jokes, more information about the plantings. I left knowing more about the tour guide than about the plants! He mentioned he didn't want it to feel like a classroom, but please give more education about the trees, flowers, fruits, etc.
3) We both remarked on how "in the closet" this tour is about Allerton's sexuality. It is ridiculous in 2021 to continue the narrative they were just friends. In general, we felt an oddly obsolete framing of these two mens' lives and how they spent their time.

Gorgeous Spot!
Aug. 2021
What an amazing and unforgettable experience! I had already done the 3 hour tour of the gardens but got to see a bit more of the gardens on this tour. Dinner was delicious, and the spot just breathtaking. Our guide Sam made it all super fun and he is also so knowledgeable. Highly recommend this tour to anyone that loves the gardens and also wants to see the fire dancers. One of the highlights of my trip to Kauai for sure!!!!!!!

Best of Both Worlds is Best with Sam Bustillos
Jul. 2021 • Family
This was our third time visiting, and it was the best because of our guide. I recommend booking a tour on Thursday afternoon if you can. The garden hosts a wonderful Aloha Market on Thursdays starting at 10 am. Bring a cooler so you can buy local fruits and veggies (including Sugar Loaf pineapple - the sweetest!) and store them in your car. We bought some lovely crafts, drank coconut juice, and lunched on some of the most delicious green papaya salad! There was a lovely hula performance under the trees. All that before the tour! Our guide, Sam Bustillos, taught us so much about the history of the garden and the traditional Hawaiian names and uses for many of the plants. His father played a major role in reclaiming the garden from sugar cane cultivation to research garden. Sam grew up helping there and is so generous sharing his knowledge and stories. Truly wonderful! And we learned to use some berries for mosquito bite itch that really works!

The un-air conditioned 15 min van ride with no opened windows began my tour experience--return ride nicely air conditioned--so not a good beginning. Guide said little about the actual plans and way too much about the rich eccentric collector--not someone I can admire bc of his privilege and lifestyle. Also guide a movie buff & kept pointing out all the places included in popular movies--this devalued my experience and definitely made me wish I'd done a different garden tour on the island. There were some epic trees included in Jurassic Park, so I was told.

Take the Tour!
Jul. 2021
We took the tour through the garden with Sam as our bus driver and tour guide. He did an amazing job and has a connection to this property because his dad worked on this property when it was first being established. Sam was super informative and taught us the medicinal uses of many of the plants on site. He was also willing to stop and take pictures for families along the way. This was not initially one of our top priorities to see, I am so glad we made the stop it was well worth the time (2.5 hours) and the money. There happened to be a farmer's market on site the day we went to so that was an extra bonus!
