We drove to the blowhole and had not researched the road past it to Wailuku, and took it as it was shorter on the map to get back to where we were staying. This is a very narrow, winding and up and down road that...More
A very scenic route as long as you aren't the driver. Over seven miles is less than 2 lanes and the far western end is a very narrow one lane. You would be a fool to drive it in anything larger than a compact car....More
This is truly a don't miss out drive. If you are even a bit squeamish about sketchy roads and heights close your eyes but don't pass this one up. You will definitely want to drive this route "clockwise" from Lahaina to Wailuku as you will...More
If you decide to take this drive, I would recommend driving from the Kapalua side of the island toward Wailuku. You will have the advantage of being closer to the inside of the road, and not on the edge of the cliff overlooking the ocean....More
I drove from Lahaina clockwise around on this road on a Sunday. There was surprisingly quite a bit of traffic coming the opposite direction. Many people were hitting the beaches and it was quite a pretty drive. Most of the way is a one lane...More
Instead of the long-winding road to Hana, take the short version around the west part of the island. Where ever you start on the west part of the island I recommend going clockwise around the island. Take time, stop and take some pictures. Take a...More
In mid December 2017 the road was closed for construction between mile marker 15 and 16.
The drive from Lahaina (clockwise) to the blow hole area was gorgeous and relatively easy. Think of rural country roads not urban super highways and exercise care - you'll...More
We drove our rental car counter clockwise ending in Lahaina. What a drive it was! The views are absolutely breathtaking. Yes, the road is one lane and steep in places, but there is ample places to pull over and let cars pass. We had the...More
Everything you hear about West Maui Loop is true. It is spectacularly gorgeous and there are some sketchy sections of road. However, it is easy to fully enjoy and appreciate this part of the island without driving the bad part if you don't want to...More

from start to go it took us about 3+ hrs, their are some hairy points in the drive where the road is so narrow you end up reversing a wee bit so that the car coming toward you can get past, i suggest beeping before approaching a corner, this lets a fellow driver know you will soon be coming around that corner, there are lots of stops and a few little stalls that you can stop at to buy food, just remember if you have a rental car they DONOT cover you for this stretch of road, YOU enter on your own risk knowing that if you do have a crash/ding with someone, YOU pay for the rental car to be fixed, all in all a good heart pumping drive.
