- Dawnelle711 contributionMaui Gold Plantation Tour!We had the best knowledgeable guide Garett was filling in for 2 people who called in sick over the weekend. Not going to lie glad they did (not at Garett's expense) But he was amazing and had a wealth of information to pass along. We were blessed! Came home with 4 pineapples that are perfect. Good job!Visited October 2023Written October 24, 2023
- milesx85Lodi, Ohio1 contributionGreat tour. Learn a lot.If you like to learn where your food comes from, this tour is for you. You see the fields they are grown in at every stage. And you also see the processing facilities where they box them up. It is not cheap though but probably in line with other costs on Maui.Visited October 2023Written November 3, 2023

This time, our family of six got to experience it and it was so authentic and amazing! Real workers, real fields, real processing. And the yummiest pineapple!! Mo was our guide and he knew everything and was so fun and personable. And we each came home with a pineapple. Moe made it come all together in a perfect and fun interactive speech, during which we would see direcrly in the farm, what he was talking about. We got to eat perfecrly ripe pineapple and even take one home. 2 hours very well spent in Maui...Mahalo for joining us in the fields with Mo! We did the Pineapple & Distillery combo tour. Our guide, Tim, made it very fun and informative. Shared a lot of interesting info about pineapples while we were in the fields. I’d give him five stars for his knowledge and entertainment, but the reservation process is flawed and it tainted our experience. We made an advanced reservation for 11:45 am. The confirmation and follow up email both said ‘please arrive by 11:30 am, 15 min before your tour’ - and we got there at 11:25 am. When we checked in, we were told “the bus is waiting on you”. What!? We rushed to use the restroom and when I exited, our tour guide was actually standing there looking for us. We proceeded to the bus and then learned there was only one seat left and one of us would need to ride up front with the driver.
So bottom line... learning all about pineapples and seeing them grow is fascinating but we arrived early, they made us feel like we were late, total cost with tip was $180 for two people and we didn’t get to sit together. Maybe just showing up and not making a reservation is better guest experience? I’m not sure. But if you make a reservation, you should arrive way early because if you show up when they tell you to, you may be late and the tour may actually leave before your scheduled time.

Our tour guide, George, knew so many interesting facts about the history of pineapple in Hawaii, and Maui in particular. His commentary was often delivered with humor which made the 90 minute tour quite enjoyable. The way George used a machete to cut five pineapples in the field was amazing. The fruit was so sweet and delicious having just been picked. We walked away with our own two pineapples ready to take back to the mainland.

Shilo did a great job and very thorough explanation of everything. We even had some weather blowing down from Haleakalā and he called it perfectly to drive around the field to kill some time; by the time we got back to try fresh pineapple, wind died down and rain stopped. Love the passion of everyone there

Great tour! We did the 11:45 am tour (do the early morning tour if you want the chance to see them picking pineapples). Mo was our tour guide - everyone of the bus was wearing a mask due to Covid (about 25 of us). Thought Mo told us the box of pineapples you get as part of the tour had 3 pineapples in it but ours only had 2 pineapples. Box ready to be hand carried onto the plane (as a carryon) - Pineapples are delicious!

Mo was outstanding! He was extremely knowledgeable and also did a great job explaining what to expect for each part of the tour. He made us comfortable, offered cold water, and everyone was able to ask him all kinds of questions about the pineapple farming process and about Maui in general. Give the man a raise! :)

I enjoyed learning about pineapples and seeing so many of them in person was really cool! The instructions on where to meet were clear and the gift shop was fantastic. The pineapple samples we were given at the end of our tour were indeed the best pineapple I had ever eaten. However, the tour felt very rushed to me. Each of the stops off the bus lasted less than 3 minutes and I had no opportunity to ask the tour guide questions. I had to run and squeeze in any pictures I wanted to as people re-boarded the bus; there was no time to soak in the experience, take photos, or ask questions, which I did not appreciate, especially given the $100/person cost of this experience. Furthermore, the tour guide started talking politics to us over the intercom during one of the bus rides towards the end of the tour, which I did NOT appreciate, especially on vacation! Very unprofessional. Lastly, we cut into one of the pineapples we got a day or 2 after the tour, and it tasted just like a pineapple I'd buy in a grocery store in the continental US: hard and sour; it was nothing like the one we tasted on the tour. I would recommend looking into other pineapple tours to see if they are better.

Ken was a WONDERFUL pineapple tour guide and very passionate about the pineapple growing/harvesting process. Very casual, calm, and friendly environment. Would definitely recommend this tour for anyone looking to enjoy fresh Hawaii pineapple along with the history. Also has great hair and sparkling personality.

This tour was great, our tour guide talked good story. We got to see all ages or pineapple and bring some home! it was also on the same grounds as the distillery tour, so we did that too! can't beat it. The only downside was how HOT the inside of the vans are, there is a lot of on and off the bus so it doesn't have enough time to cool down, it would be better if the van was open sides for a cross breeze, but thats not enough to deter my from this tour! :)

Our family overall found the tour to be informative and something a little different to do. We took that last tour of the day though and that may have been a mistake as I believe some of the workers went home by the end - so the processing facility, for example, was not running by the time we got there. One other issue is we were told - as Canadians - that we were not allowed to take the pineapples we were given back into Canada (we were going home the next day and intended to). Well we did some further research and took a chance and Canadian customs let us bring them in no problem!

Aloha! Thank you for joining us on your vacation! We are so happy that you were able to bring your pineapples home to Canada. We have had guests who have had them confiscated at customs so we have made it a habit to caution folks so they don't loose their fruit. Our processing facility doesn't run everyday, since we do have an active plantation our workers move from different parts of the operation based on what our pineapples need. We would love to have you back on a day the plant is running!

Our guide, Shiloh, did a great job with the pineapple tour. He was very knowledgeable about the entire process of growing pineapples from planting to flowering to harvesting. He told us very near information about quality of pineapples, particularly regarding the perfect blend of sweetness and acidity. Shiloh shared pictures with us from his cell phone of closeup shots that he took of the flowering pineapple plants. He answered everyone's questions about the planting and harvesting process, plus some other misc. questions that people had, including what happened to the pineapples that were too small to market. We found out that those little pineapples, at least some of them, are used for liquor. It was also neat to near that pineapple plants only produce two pineapples and then they are done! In addition to all of the interesting information that we learned from our guide Shiloh, he made the tour very enjoyable by his great sense of humor! Getting the box of two pineapples at the end of the tour was the icing on the cake. I would highly recommend this tour to others!

I know there are pineapple tastings/samples on this tour. Is it a lot of sampling? If we eat breakfast beforehand and plan to get lunch right after, would we still have a good appetite for lunch after the tour? :)
Written July 9, 2023
Aloha Victoria! You should still have plenty of room to enjoy lunch afterwards. You should expect to enjoy 3 or so nice pineapple chunks during the tasting and then you will leave with a take home pineapple for each member of your group to enjoy during your stay or at home :)

Can we just show up and join a tour or is booking in advance recommended/required?
Written October 26, 2019
I believe you can do either. We bought our tickets online but I saw some people show up and purchase tickets there. The only risk is that the tour sells out and you have to wait for the next one.

Is there a bus tour that goes from Lahaina to the Pineapple Tour? I cannot find one. Thank you.
Written February 19, 2019
We were on cruise and docked in Lahaina.....Could not find any bus - spoke to Maui Pineapple as well as several concierges..... ....we took Uber ( about $70-80). Rental cars are hard to find in Lahaina and if found, expensive......takes just under an hour from Lahaina via car....granted there was some traffic when we went.

How bumpy was ride in field and is the walking portion very difficult? Two older adults are in our party and need to know if they can do it?
Written August 11, 2018
Somewhat bumpy but not a lot of walking. There is a lot of stopping and getting off the bus to look around but they could choose not to get out every time and just view some things from the bus. The bus is airconditioned and has comfortable seats. I think it would be ok for older folks. And with so many things on Maui only accessible to those who are only in great physical shape, this would be an activity they could fully enjoy.

I heard that only maybe Tuesday and Thursday the packing plant operates. Wanted a day when I can see it all. We did this before and was so pleased to see this whole operation.
Thanks
Written July 18, 2018
This is correct! They harvest on Monday and Wednesday from the field. I would recommend a Tuesday or a Thursday if you want to see it all, because if not you will miss out on the factory portion all together.
