We love this short hike to get out in the woods. Love that this area is mostly pines. It's quiet and just a really pleasant walk.

.Largest concentration of trails on Maui. Well maintained and easy to follow. You can hike as short or long as you want. Some trails are shared with mountain bikes but they have a lot of their own dedicated trails as well. Trails are all heavily forested so good place to get out of the sun

A lovely 6 mile hike from the west to east loop. It's relatively easy without too many crazy uphills or anything, and a lot of people bike here as well. It's the perfect hike if you're trying to avoid the strong afternoon sun, as most of it is shaded, and gives you a true forest vibe. The foliage is really lush and beautiful and has some endemic plants. There's a huge area with a lot of kupu Kupu, which is a tropical fern that is used for medicinal purposes and a large slope with numerous Kahili Ginger Flowers. It is a good way to enjoy a day in these relaxing beautiful forest!

An hour away from the beach you can find a dense forest up in the mountains from Maui. Bumpy road but good parking. A couple of portable lavatories at the start. Several different hikes or mountain bike rides are not too hard. A little slippery but absolutely beautiful. The densest first on the island. We saw deer on the ride up but no animals except for an amazing chameleon.

Nice trails to follow but scenery can become fairly monotonous after a while. Nice walk and exercise.

Nice area to hike and get away from heat when you need a break. Very easy trails, though always good shoes recommended.

This was a great hike although slightly more difficult than was anticipated at the outset. Most peoople that we saw(which was few and far between) were very friendly, but mostly it was us hiking up and down a 6 mile trail on the side of Haleakala, It is beautiful up there for sure.

My partner and I hiked the Kahakapao Trail yesterday, February 13, 2019. There are trees and foliage down all along the trail as a result of a major wind storm last Sunday. Trail conditions gets worse the further you are from the parking lot with big sections of the trail completely covered by downed trees and foliage. At one point we had to climb over several downed trees that were on a steep slope that looked like it might slide at any time. We saw evidence that they have started to work on clearing the trail, but it will be a huge job!

On a very windy day, we decided to skip the beach and try this hike. The directions to the trail outlined in the prior post from Bob S, are very good.

The trail is about .5 miles from parking lot. The sign says 6.2 miles for the loop, but we got more like 5.5 miles. We are in decent shape and it took about 2 hours to do the hike. It’s a relatively easy meandering trail. You can’t go too fast as the mud makes it slippery. Honestly, it is a very pretty setting, but kind of monotonous. There are no waterfalls or beautiful views. Take note that it’s about 15 degrees cooler than at sea level.

For bike riders, there are lots of obstacle courses and bike trails.

If you need a break from the beach, and want to burn off a mai tai, give this hike a try.

Makawao Forest Reserve reminds me of Oregon-woodsy, cooler temperatures and not lots of people on the trail. It's just a few miles and not very challenging. If you're exploring upcountry it's worth a visit.
