So much beauty here and so much to learn. Don't spend your time on a lobster and wine cruise. Get your feet wet with a working lobster boat tour or a windjammer. Both werre amazing. Beautiful little town.

Frenchman's Bay is nestled in the Bar Harbor Village where the flagship stands as the Bar Harbor Motor Inn. A four mast schooner offers a sailing experience from the all purpose marina. The bay usually has a combination of working lobster boats, private sail boats and private motor craft moored in the harbor. A whale watching vessel takes visitors out for a two hour cruise several times a day. Stores and restaurants line the main street and near the marina are other similar offerings. Parking can be an issue in high season. Hint: The best place to get a view of Frenchman's Bay is from the top of Cadillac Mountain which can be reached by motor vehicle or one of the shuttles. At dusk this bay lights up with a variety of colors from the beautiful sunsets. A large public park slopes down to the marina with benches and places to picnic.

We went with a local tour company, Sea Venture Boat Tours. He is a local and knows the area well. We saw seals, eagles, osprey, and wonderful rock formations/scenery. The islands are beautiful. A private boat tour on a smaller craft is the best way to see it. The big boats can't get close to the islands.

During low tide, you can actually walk across the sea floor to an Island called "Bar Island". We didn't know about this until we saw others walking and driving across the bay! It was a pretty cool experience to be standing in the middle of the bay!

The scenery rivals Alaska. The ride aboard the Margaret Todd Schooner was all that one could image. I would go back in a flash if I could. The Captain's knowledge gives you as a passenger complete confidence in what will happen and what you should look forward to.

Frenchman Bay is really beautiful and one could just spend the day there watching all the ships, boats, and schooners coming and going. The Porcupine Islands as beautiful from the bay at sun set. We took an evening sunset cruise on the Margaret Todd and had amazing views of the bay and surrounding area. We saw all kinds of birds and dolphins too. MY son loved trying to "push" Balance Rock over and it was easy to get to from the Shore Path that runs along the bay. The path makes for a nice walk/stroll after lobster meal overlooking the bay. The Path is wheelchair and stroller friendly, all flat which is great if you have someone in your group that is elderly and has limited balance.

This excursion is just the best. The captain is very informative and educational. We learned a lot about the lobster industry. We also saw Bald Eagles, Seals and Seal pups on one of the lighthouse islands. About 1.5 to 2 hrs long.

Frenchmans Bay is a moderately large area along the west side of Mt Desert Island. Hard to rate as a unit, it offers a great opportunity to see this section of Mt Desert from the water. Sail on the four masted schooner, the Margaret Todd, rent kayaks or use other tour boats. Not highly expensive, there are many different tours available including sunset which is a winner. Kayaks or trailer mounted boats can be launched from the Inn side of the Bar Harbor Town pier from a concrete ramp.. Just the pier and small beach themselves are a delight to visit. Surrounded by local fisher boats, the Bar Harbor Inn and a nice park, this is downtown Bar Harbor at its' best. Don't miss this. The shore path begins here, exactly at the end of the pier. A free area and one of the best.

My first stop after Hulls Cove Visitor Center was an overlook with a dramatic scene. Overlooking the pines in the park, and out in the distance in the waters of the Frenchman Bay were the glistening islands of the Bay. See photos. Wow! what a sight.

It couldn't have asked for a better start to my holiday.

Frenchman Bay is what makes Bar Harbor. It's beautiful to gaze upon no matter where you are, no matter what time of day. From the Reading Room, the Shore Path, the Looking Glass, Agamont Park, the Bar Island land bridge... Morning, noon, and night, Frenchman Bay is the quintessential scene of a New England coastal town.Take it in while you can because you'll miss it once you're gone. We took the Somes Sound Fjord boat tour down the coast of Mt. Dessert Island and got to experience the bay by boat. Just a wonderful time. No wonder they get so many tourists each year.
