We hiked to Eagle Lake from Jordan Pond and the crossover trail. Can be a long but beautiful hike going all the way around on the carriage road. We have done that before. This time we just went to the waters edge for a bit and walked back to Jordan Pond. Lovely hike, no eagles but we did see and hear a large barred owl.

The walk around the Eagle Lake Carriage road is an iconic ANP experience. The road is recently rebuilt and there is so much to see. Give yourself at least 1.5 hours or more to soak it all in.

Rode the bike trail around, which nearly killed us because we were expecting grades and were towing the dog in her cart! Anyway, it's beautiful. But sometimes you can't see the lake at all. There are LOTS of folks that ride this trail, so crowded.

Eagle Lake is a beautiful stop in Acadia. You can hike near the lake and gets some great pictures. There are a couple turnoffs in the park to take pictures from above.

Eagle Lake supplies Bar Harbor with drinking water so you cannot swim in it, but it's fine to paddle a kayak or canoe on it. The carriage road around it offers beautiful views of the lake and the hills behind it, all year round. In winter, it is a beautiful spot for skating and ice-fishing, with the east side of the carriage road open to snowmobilers. A perfect length if you're looking for a one- to two-hour roundtrip. A bit long for those with small children in tag-alongs or pedaling themselves.

My family and I did this bike ride in the morning. It was 6.3 miles in a loop around the lake. The entire ride is along the carriage road so it is not a technically complex bike trail: wide and smooth the whole way. We parked and then went right. There is a sustained and moderately challenging uphill in that direction ending at about mile 2.4 followed by a long and delightful descent. Later there is another mild ascent followed by downhill stretches all the way back to start. There are also some nice views of the lake but most of the ride is forest lined.

That being said, this is not a trail for you if you are not used to bike riding. If you are not in good shape, it might be difficult. If you are a regular cyclist, it will be no problem whatsoever.

For some unexplainable reason, Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island in Maine isn't listed on TripAdvisor but nearly every known natural attraction in the park is, like Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. So be it. There are so many things to see. The biggest, along with Cadillac Mountain, is Eagle Lake. At 436 acres with a maximum depth of 110 feet and an average depth of 50 feet, it is the largest freshwater lake in Acadia National Park. Fishing is allowed but a license is required for Maine residents 16 years or older and for non-residents 12 years or older. Salmon, brook trout and lake trout are popular catches. If inclined, you can walk or jog or bike completely around Eagle Lake on a 6.1-mile second of a Carriage Road. You also can explore the lake via canoe or kayak. It is a photographer's delight. One of the most striking views of Eagle Lake is from the western observation area of Cadillac Mountain. Eagle Lake is very accessible. From Bar Harbor, take Route 233. There are two parking areas on either side of the road. If you prefer not to drive, a free Island Explorer Shuttle Bus provides pickup and drop-off service. Be sure to take a camera with plenty of film. The area has a variety of places to explore and get some great photographs.

This really is worth taking a spin through especially if you have your own wheels. Plenty of stopping spots, beaches, cliffs and walks abound. One way traffic throughout so speed is not an issue with two lanes. No need to rush through here either...

Rent a bike at Acadia Bike and take the carriage trail to this location. Spend the day enjoying a spectacular view. One of my favorite biking trips and locations ever! Easy to moderately difficult slopes.

Eagle Lake is part of Acadia National Park, and I don't understand why it has its own listing. If you do a thorough visit of Acadia, it would certainly include seeing Eagle Lake. It's not as if you need to go out of your way to see it.

Anyway, it is a pretty lake.

If you stop at the Eagle Lake parking area, use the carriage road at the end of the parking lot near the rest rooms to walk over to the lake. It will take you under one of the remarkable Rockefeller stone bridges, which you should take a moment to examine and appreciate.
