We enjoyed every bit of our visit to Alcatraz and the ferry ride across is a great way to view San Francisco from afar. The Audio tour is a must while you walk the cells, narrated by former inmates and guards, it gives a great...More
Visited Alcatraz for the Behind the Scenes and night tour. You get to go to places on the island that aren’t covered during the normal audio tour. Highlights included the hospital wing, tunnels, garden, dungeons. Lots of walking and stairs so you need to be...More
Bought tickets on line, had friends go to pier 33 at 1310 for 1330 departure, they loved it, great photos, professional staff and nice waiting area, with coffee and snacks option. They planned this trip for 2 years and were not disappointed. LOVED it.
We had a wonderful couple of hours and enjoyed every bit of our visit.
Fast, smooth transportation to the island and a perfect cuppa en route.
It helped to have seen the Clint Eastwood film so long ago. I felt I was reliving it. Brilliant...More
No matter how many times I do this tour. The audio tour gets me. A piece of magical history told so well as you walk Around
My kids are 9 and 5 and loved it.
Book in advance. Seems like a 2-3 month wait. You...More
I was lucky to get tickets a few days before our tour but there were only 2 of us; generally you should book ahead as it is very popular. I took my son, thinking that he would like it and I would be along for...More
We visited San Francisco and my husband really wanted to visit this. I wasn’t so keen to go. But I’m so glad I did. The audio tour of the prison is fantastic. So interesting and you get to see so much of the prison. The...More
A fascinating place that has lots of visitors. The Park Service does a great job of ferrying people to and from the island, which holds so much history not only as a federal prison but as a fort during the Civil War. The gift shop...More

I don't know for sure if there's a same day option. I know there was a long line on the day we visited and we were there on a Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. and I don't think anyone from the line got on our tour. I heard the line was for anyone wanting to wait in case of a no-show. I read reviews well in advance and found that many travelers suggested buying tickets 90 days out. That's the soonest they can be purchased. I bought ours at 87 days in advance and they were over 50% sold out.

First, look at other tours that combine Alcatraz with sat the Hop in Hop Off Bus tour. Check it twice a day. If you get that tour you’ll also get Alcatraz vouchers which will get you tickets at the shoreline. alcatraz booth. Many tour operators already have Alcatraz tickets to go along with their tours. We booked the Seaplane Adventure / Alcatraz tours. In the morning we flew all over San Francisco, Alcatraz, Muir Woods, the city , on a half hour flight. They gave us vouchers which enabled us to go to Alcatraz as the vouchers reserved two tickets for us.
If all that fails there are tour operators from the Hop on off Bus/Alcatraz tour selling tickets all around the Alcatraz kiosk near Pier 33. If you go down there one day ask the guy what time he’ll be there the day you want to go. Tickets are around but all are connected in combination with other tours. My concierge at the hotel found these tours for me. Call your hotel and ask for the concierge. Tell him to please find you a combination tour ticket with Alcatraz. He’ll ask for your credit card and get the confirmation and vouchers for you. Start with the Muir Woods:Alcatraz tour. Try by yourself online, say with viatours or Great Pacific. If that fails, call your concierge at the hotel you are staying at. It’s all worth the effort to have them in advance.
