No wonder they called this place the rock because you need to rock back and forth to keep moving because it's so cold even on a summers day. A brilliant place to visit and the audio guide really explains what life would have been like...More

You can't go to SF without taking this tour. The audio tour does an excellent job of walking you through the prison with anecdotes and stories from inmates, prison guards and the families that lived on the island. Its hard to believe men actually lived...More

Nothing less than fantastic, well-organized and interesting to walk through the old prison. Be sure to book tickets well ahead - several months actually. Bring warm clothes as the ferry trip is quite chilly.

Really enjoyed this half day (allow 3 hours). Well organised, brilliant audio included so no need for guide books, wonderfully preserved as it was and no frills. Good value we thought.

Crowds are annoying, but well worth your time to stop. We were able to speak with a former prison guard on our trip. It was really neat to hear his experience.

You definitely need to do the audio tour and be prepared to walk uphill quite a bit. There was a shuttle for disabled individuals, but I felt guilty for using that just since I only have a mild disability. It was tough, but worth it...More

There is a cafe at Pier 33, a snack bar on the boat, and there is a cafe on Angel Island where you can purchase food and drinks. Since you're on the 9:30am departure, that means you're going to Alcatraz Island first. The... More
