Founded in 1935, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was the first museum on the West Coast dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Now, after a major three-year building expansion designed by Snohetta, SFMOMA returns as one of San Francisco's must-see destinations. Nearly tripling its gallery space, the museum features more of its outstanding collection of more than 33,000 works, along with new art, including the Doris and Donald Fisher Collection, one of the greatest private collections of modern and contemporary art in the world. With art-filled public spaces, free entry for visitors 18 and under, numerous outdoor areas, two museum stores, and multiple dining options, the museum is open to San Francisco and visitors as never before. Save time and reserve tickets online.

My 18-year old daughter, husband and I enjoyed the Museum very much. My 12 year old son, was not impressed, but it takes a lot to impress a 12-year old boy...he did enjoy some of the Warhol's and more cartoonish artwork. But there are large window seats that he could hang out in on his phone while we enjoyed the... More

My friends and I had great expectations visiting the newly renovated SFMOMA, but were disappointed. Each of us concluded separately that we were not very impressed. There is a huge amount of floor space, holding a modest number of works. We found it difficult to find works by artists we were especially interested in, and there seemed to be no... More

We got tickets online well in advance of the day we attended.. a week-day mid morning reservation. The special exhibits were fascinating along with the regular collection. One could take all day there to enjoy everything. By mid-day the building was quite full and somewhat crowded to get around. Had a snack late morning at the in-house cafe- "Cafe 5".... More

This was my first visit to the expanded museum. Warning - it is now huge! There are six floors of art. And there is enough variety to satisfy anyone who is at least reasonably interested in modern art. A huge and varied collection. Real fun if a bit daunting to get through thoroughly in one go. I had a break... More

A great finish of a business day. A few hours strolling through known and less known art. I liked the police man who is so real.

Beautifully "re-invented" the architecture is crisp, modern and functional. We took elevator to the top 7th floor. It said, sculpture garden, but really a long balcony with 2 "statues". However the roof line is beautifully executed. Floor after floor of well curated collections. Several galleries consisted of just a handful of works by a particular artist. Nearly all were fantastic!... More

The collection is quite varied and spread over 5 floors. They are fortunate to have the space to display large pieces of artwork on individual walls. I live in London and prefer the collection at the Tate Modern. $25 entry is expensive and must prevent lower income people accessing art - a shame. I have been travelling around the US... More

MOMA is always a little overwhelming and just not enough time - nor should there be - to do it all - so the experience of a couple of floors is a treat, beautiful exhibitions thoughtfully presented - good coffee here too

Staying in SoMa

Neighbourhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighbourhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighbourhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
