About
Through much public involvement and political workings, Golden Gate National Recreation Area was created in 1972. The headquarters for the new park was established in the post’s original army hospital. As part of the redevelopment effort for the park, many of the underutilized, temporary army buildings were removed to create Fort Mason’s Great Meadow, as open space for city’s residents and visitors alike. Fort Mason Center, located close to the water at Buchanan Street and Marina Blvd. hosts several complexes of renovated military buildings, at the hub of the first urban National Park, visitors can discover all the vitality and diversity that make San Francisco one of the most exciting cities in the world. The concept that inspired creation of the GGNRA was to bring the park to the people. It is the bustling activity at Fort Mason Center that brings people to the park. Fort Mason Center combines, as perhaps no other place in the country, a magnificent setting in the heart of a great city with cultural activity for people of diverse interests and backgrounds.

We had a walk round the park and it was really nice but it was a pity that it was pouring down with rain when we were there.

The meadow is a nice, green space. Right next to it is the Fort Mason Community Garden. While the garden is member-only and gated, you can go in and take in all the wonderful flora - flowers and vegetables - and birds. Maybe you will run into gardeners hard at work but up for a chat. It is another green space for some peace and quiet.

We walked through this park on our way to the downtown section, lovely green space. The paths are generous, trees stunning and the views are great.

I stayed in the hostel here for a few days & really liked the area. There’s plenty of open space, great views of the bay, the bridge & Alcatraz.

Walked about 1.1 miles from Fort Mason to Fisherman's Wharf. Also passed the maritime museum. Was very pleasant.

There are lovely views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz from here. Worth a walk if you are visiting the wharf area.

These installations are in the same vein as Andy Goldsworthy - in plain sight masquerading as natural objects. The details in these bronze castings are amazing. We are proud and grateful to have these installations, albeit for just one year.

A little breath of fresh greenness in San Francisco. A lovely open grassy space ideal for a walk or just a place to rest.

Stumbled upon this nice green space while walking towards the nearby marina. Plenty of space for kicking a soccer ball around or tossing a frisbee. Great views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Not crowded. Most people here were locals with their dog or out for a walk/jog. As with most places in SF, there is a homeless element present in the park. I never felt unsafe, however.
