About
From its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate, Fort Point protected San Francisco harbor from Confederate and foreign attack during and after the U.S. Civil War. Its beautifully arched casemates display the art of the master brick mason from the Civil War period.

- Pranav BalachandarTampa, Florida103 contributionsFort Point Vista PointOne of the best places in the area, offering a close up & splendid view of the Golden Gate Bridge. A good place to take your family. You could catch ships passing underneath, see the Alcatraz Island from there, enjoy the waves by the shore. Decent parking available, but could get filled up on a busy day. Fog could tone down the experience, but it is undoubtedly one of the best spots to view the GGB.Visited April 2022Written March 9, 2023

The hike is not very long from the parking lot up the hill. We did not tour the fort, but we did enjoy the views from the outside as well as the views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and Alcatraz. It was a cool day, but we enjoyed watching people sailboarding near the point. We got some good pictures. I recommend a visit to Fort Point.Visited May 2023Written June 2, 2023

Well worth the visit. The view from the top is great. The history of the building is fascinating.
It was free on the day were there, as was the parking.
Recommend. W
(Tip - the toilets outside are horrendous)

A great start to explore before you go over the bridge. See how the bridge was built and see it from underneath an added bonus is that it is free to enter well worth a visit.

This is a lovely former fort, located just under the Golden Gate Bridge.
It provides some stunning views of the bridge, but on its own, it's not too interesting.
Entrance is complimentary.

Beautiful view of the bridge! Not a lot to do, but views are amazing. Limited parking too. Your car might get wet. Be careful!

Magical and beautiful view. An Engineering marvel. You can watch and admire it for hours. The surroundings of the visiting site is nice too with some gift shops, food and a little park.

How long should one plan to spend at Fort Point on a day it's open?
Jennifer H
Plano, TX290 contributions
About an hour. The weather will determine your length of stay. If there is a cold, biting wind you will want to wrap it up as the Fort is in the windiest spot.

Can you walk across the bridge from here?

I did. Be aware, of course, that you have to climb from sea level up to bridge deck level. It is all on good paved trails, however, and needless to say, remarkably scenic. So if you are in decent physical shape, no problem.
