The children's library is great, so is the grand entry, you just can't avoid the homeless folks who spend their days in the library to keep warm and dry. They tend to use the bathroom to bathe and organize their belongings. This leads to lack of access. Not to disparage the homeless, it is unfortunate that the bathrooms are not... More

I'm a California native born and raised in San Francisco. I can't say enough about this beautiful, historical (built in 1878), six story library...if I still lived in S.F. I'd be in there every day. Beautiful architecture with windows making up the ceiling so you're looking at the sky, amazing plethora of books, maps, city census, California census, newspapers, current,... More

I went to a film festival in the basement here and then went to explore the library itself. It's a great public library and currently has a beautiful and unique Alice in Wonderland display on the top floor.

This very brightly lit library has so many books and other media for all patrons, whether you're a toddler or an accomplished reader. There are so many specialty sections: children's, teens, fiction, including ethnicity and gender sections. Well staffed by helpful librarians and pages. Plenty of seats and tables with outlets for you to plug in your laptop. Restrooms are... More

A beautiful building inside and out with exhibits and friendly staff. The only issue is that there are many homeless people in the immediate surroundings. It's not their choice to be homeless, of course, but it makes going in and out rather sad.

This library is just down the street from where I live, and it's an impressive collection of books and other material. It's got great spaces inside for chilling with a book and plugs if you're working on a laptop. Wish I had more time to just sit there and read!

So I really like libraries and I'm so glad they're still here. I usually use my local branch. I went to your words and to my surprise there's a café in the basement! who knew:)

While this library is nice and large, it's not in the best of areas. For me, it's close to work and I can pop in and out and grab what I need. It's multi level so be sure to ask for some help or do some prior research to help locate what you are looking for.

One of the most diverse and comprehensive LibRARY's I have been to. Check out the adjunct rooms . Check to see if there is an exposition going on when you plan to visit. Do check out the James Hormel LBGTQ room. Public transportation is definitely recommended! Save the books! and support our LibRARY's

A great libary except for all the homeless hanging out and sleeping. It's hard to enjoy a comic book because of the smell

Staying in Civic Center

Neighbourhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
