If you wanted to learn about SF, in one day and on foot, Columbus Avenue would be either number one for my choice of where to start, or a super close second to California Street (which is probably too long, along with Geary Street, to cover in just one day)! If not for the fact that Columbus takes you on a genrally NW to SE or vice-versa path that cuts diagonally through most of the major landmark intersections or ones from where you can view them, then it's worth it just for the fact that it brings you along some of the best retail options for delicious food, drink, and truffles - the chocolate variety, not the fungii! From the Transamerica Pyramid in the heart of the Financial District (at its SE end) to the periphery of the Fisherman's Wharf area and a block from Ghirardelli Square (at its NW end), Columbus Avenue offers a person, especially one on foot (like I was), ample opportunities for adventures in discovery! From Washington Square with the "Saints Peter and Paul Church" right at Filbert Street to XOX Truffles at 754 Columbus Ave (a MUST VISIT truffle shop, by Greenwich) to La Trappe Cafe (an amazing Belgian style bistro serving over 500 beers - yes, five hundred! - and excellently delicious food) to Lil' Italy's offerings to some of the best sushi... I could go on and on, OR - you could go on and get out there! What are you waiting for?!!

Looking all the way down Columbus Ave, we had a perfect view of Transamerica Pyramid. A cool part of the city!

Columbus Avenue is a row of about five blocks or so that has a beautiful sidewalks of Italian Cafe. San Francisco is my hometown. It is categorized by districts, and Columbus Avenue is in the heart of "North Beach" known as the Italian town. Here, you will find authentic Italian restaurants, lots of really good pizza spots, but the best part, you get to sit on the sidewalk, outside just like in Paris and Italy, overlooking the cars going by, people walking, and simply enjoying the San Francisco local lifestyle.
I highly recommend you walk towards Washington Park right off Columbus and Union, and enjoy a nice stroll especially on a beautiful night. Best time to come to Columbus Avenue is in the evening, when all the lights are up! During the holidays, it is a fantastic and a must visit!
Until then, Cheers! ~ :p

I walked on Columbus Avenue several times during my visit to San Francisco in February 2019. From Fisherman's Wharf, it is a way to walk all the way back to Union Square while avoiding the hills of San Francisco. While walking on Columbus Avenue I saw Coit Tower, the Joe Dimaggio playground, Lombard Street and a lot of Italian restaurants, cafes, bakery's, etc. You will pass the eternal City Lights Bookstore and be on the fringe of Chinatown. Columbus Avenue leads to the Transamerica Pyramid Building.

We walked along this major street that starts around the Fisherman's Wharf area, runs through North Beach (Little Italy) through Chinatown and towards the Financial District.
You easily spend a few days exploring the touristy Fishermans Wharf area or visiting Little Italy for Italian culture and where we had a lovely Italian Seafood meal at Sotte Marie or going to Chinatown.
It’s a great street for exploring.

Interesting street to wander as it travels through North Beach and Little Italy and skirts the edge of Chinatown before it ends at the Transamerica Pyramid. This is where you find the famous City Lights Bookstore, one of the homes of the counterculture Beat Movement and now an official historic landmark.

Columbus Avenue in North Beach is lined with restaurants and cafes and the famous City Lights Bookstore and Washington Square Park and some other interesting stuff, so just wander, feel free to take detours and possibly get a little lost, then come back for more serendipity, good food, and good fun.

I walked with my daughters down the street. It felt very safe. We ate at a couple places and enjoyed the walk. A nice place for a stroll.

Nice party street. I went there in the evening and there was lots of bars and clubs. A little bit different part than the downtown

Great little card shop yes but so much more than that. Great place to buy unique souvenirs. Stop here first if you like to journal I bought the cutest one and my daughter bought the same one.
