Truly beautiful and photogenic spot of SF bay view to take pictures.
BUT not safe at all. My teenager son was almost attacked by a young (20s maybe) individual when he was taking pictures. Out of nowhere he walked up and almost kicked my son into the water.
The streets are so quiet and empty so if you’re alone, you are defenseless and no one would know you were there.
So if you go there at sunset or later, go with someone, pay attention to who’s there and who’s coming, or be ready for anything.
The island is full of construction places and your GPS map doesn’t help very much :(
The island’s museum seems interesting and its bar seemed very nice but I don’t think I’d go back there.

Come here for great views of downtown San Francisco across the Bay, and also some of the hills. This island is land fill that was created for the 1939 Exposition. Some of the Exposition buildings are still here. But these days you will find a lot of construction of new apartments. So someday this will be a city itself.

This was a nice place. However the San Francisco building department seems to have gone wild. They take paradise and put up tall buildings, blocking the Golden Gate view of people in the East Bay, but we don't have a vote. Creating further gridlock on the Bay Bridge. I used to like to go to downtown San Francisco for shopping, Giants ballpark, whatever, now it is difficult. I guess there are people with lots of money who will buy these places and pay for the view. However for all of us who already live here and like our Golden Gate View this is a nightmare.

Saturday morning 5 of us took the somewhat new Treasure Island Taxi from the Ferry Building, leaving at 11:20 (after checking out the Farmer's market.) There was plenty of space, a short 10 minutes. Great short trip, friendly staff.

We walked to Mersea Restaurant, about 1/2 mile. Currently a little longer walk due to construction, but found our way. There is a large open parking lot at the restaurant, with outside and inside seating. Lots of dogs, great mix of people, music in the outside courtyard.

The menu is varied, lots of choices, tacos/fish and chips/hamburgers/large salads.
The large half salted caramel/vanilla ice cream dessert was outstanding--worth the trip in itself!

The owner/Manger was gracious, offered to take our phots, and was available to answer questions.

WE returned to the free Treasure Island Museum, directly across from the water taxi pier. It opens at noon on Sat, and had lots of parking. A fabulous old building, art deco statues at the entrance, Treasure Island, Clippers and Navy history. The single staff member was interesting and shared local stories. A large whisky bar (which wasn't open) is in the lobby as well as a member club. They have more items in storage, waiting building repair decisions.

It became extremely windy, so the 3:20 taxi return was cancelled. Uber back to the city was quick and easy. A great way to spend the day!

This landfill island is in transition as so many new projects are under construction or planned. You can have a wonderful view of downtown SF from the water front. You have to drive off and on the bridge, so traffic is an issue. There is some limited bus service from SF

there is something so magical and otherworldly about this place. we need to help those that are inhabiting the island and being taken advantage of. before they destroy the whole place.

Despite the industrial nature of Treasure Island and all the new construction and detours on the island, its still easy to navigate and catch some fantastic views.

Start your visit with dining at Aracely Cafe which has a lovely patio dining area on good weather days.

Followup your meal, was a quick walk along the perimeter trail of the island and soak in the great views. You'll be able to get great shots of everything from the East Bay, to Angel Island, to Alcatraz and the whole cityscape.

Treasure Island has a long history and is a man-made island that was built in 1936-37 for the International Exposition held in 1939. It was taken over by the U.S. Navy in the early 40’s until it was released back to the public in 1997. Since then the buildings have slowly been torn down or have been converted for use for businesses and residential housing.

The island was a great place to go to view San Francisco, the Bay Bridge and S.F. Bay and was a great spot for night-time photography of the city as well. However, as of March 2020, almost the entire island is under some sort of construction. Most of the island has detours and the old vantage points of San Francisco have been walled off or are inaccessible due to the construction. I have heard about massive development of the island with high-rise buildings and it looks like it’s true. The island has quite a movie filming history as well but nothing to visit. For the most part, I would recommend staying away from Treasure Island for now as it is a huge mess.
