If you're moderately interested in Japan or Japanese culture or a full-fledged Japanophile; you will not be disappointed. I venture to say even a person who isn't acquainted with Japan or Japanese culture would enjoy it. Amazing stores with notebooks; stationary, kimonos, Japanese ceramics or bonsai; restaurants .... it's all here:

Maybe I had too high of expectations but I was very disappointed by the Japan Center. It's just a small 1960's era shopping mall with some Japanese shops. The Dasio is small and the rest of the mall isn't inviting. My visit was in the morning when most of the restaurants were closed. Perhaps this is good dinning destination but... More

Japan Center in the heart of Japantown is a two level mall with all types of stores that sell predominantly Japanese goods. If it is made in Japan, you can probably find some variation of it here. There are some good Japanese restaurants in the center as well. It is much more subdued and subtle than Chinatown, but still enjoyable... More

My daughter and I visited the Japan Center during our trip to San Francisco and absolutely loved the feeling of being transported to Japan. The food options were unique as well as the shops. We especially liked Ichiban Kan, the store with literally everything you can imaging was a fund stop on our tour. We had a crepe and Ramen... More

None of these restaurants would survive a week in Japan but its better than nothing. This feels like a 1970's version of Tokyo.

Nice to walk through, but not a lot more. Mostly businesses selling Japanese-made products, from low to high end. A few restaurants (which I understand are better located on the adjoining side street). An hour should pretty much do it.

with obviously lots of restaurants, predominantly japanese, of course. though there are some korean, and the neighborhood has other asian places plus even hawaiin. a great place to shop for all things japanese or to have a drink or some tasty food. can spend a couple of hours here. and if you want to spend the night there is even... Went there to look around, found it interesting since there were many japanese places and people inside. However it was nothing from another world. It is a good place to go and eat some sushi or icecream but Not really great to walk around and shop.

If you need many travel souvenir in economic prices, visit Daiso. I love five-fingers socks! Do you need scents for tea ceremony? Visit Kohshi, and ask very delicate scents from Japan. Many cuty goods in shops and enjoy Japanese cartoon cultures. Do you need cash? ATM asks 3$ cash withdrawal cost. It's a relatively lower transaction fee for International travelers!

This is where you could find Japanese Center, shopping malls with Daiso and Japanese restaurants as well as Kinokinuya. Peaceful and non-crowded.
