I'm surprised this is not rated higher! What a beautiful building in The Mission neighborhood.
We looked at it as a part of the Wild SF Walking Tour (which, by the way, I highly recommend, especially if you are not a person to normally go on tours). There is lots of murals in the neighborhood in general, but this is one of the most striking ones. It covers the entire Women's Building and showcases powerful women from different cultures, background, and ethnic origins. It was also created by a group of female muralists who were tired of the fact that they were repeatedly excluded from the male-dominant murals culture in the 1970s. Read up on the history of the Women's Building and the neighborhood in general to make your experience of seeing it more interesting! Most importantly, walk around the Mission district more afterwards, there are many more murals around to make it a memorable experience.

The Mission District is famous for murals and this is one of the best with suitable themes for the Women's Building, which is also an institution in the city. Stop by and enjoy the street art.

... but please, People .... They are a nonprofit. So before you go off to get your $4 coffee, please go in and make a donation. Leave something useful behind from your trip to SF.Seriously, the culture that created this mural is being destroyed by gentrification. Make a positive statement by helping.

We were lucky enough to be taken to the Women's Building on two occasions during our recent stay in Mission while taking two different walking tours in the area. Without a guide we would not be able to understand the murals, the characters and symbols, who the faces belonged to, what they had accomplished for women. We were told that in recent years the murals had been refreshed.
The building is a non-profit community centre led by women, opened in 1971 to assist women related issues and causes, it still exists today to provide social assistance and education to women.

We saw this as part of the Streets of San Fran cycling tour. Our guide (Claire) was very knowledgeable about street art, and we strongly suggest that you have someone guide you through the various murals around SF, or else you probably won't know much more other than you are looking at a pretty picture. There is significance to so much in these murals, but only a local can explain it. Also, while we were admiring this mural, two locals walked by and sneered at us, saying, "This is what we get for living next to a mural".

Very nice mural in a part of town where you will find other murals. Well done and suitable for the non-profit that inhabits this building. Part of the community.

We were in the Mission District of San Francisco. There are many wonderful murals in this area. Women did the amazing murals on the Women's Building in the area.

Don't miss this mural on your trip to San Francisco. It represents the thinking of seven women muralists of many cultures, and lists the names of many important American women and other women respected by the artists.

I visited San Francisco this summer, and not only was this building highly photogenic, it also serves a higher purpose of empowerment. I was pleased to be able to receive this message while also just touring the city and taking pictures: it made for a very memorable experience. Highly recommend the trip here as there is a lot of wonderful stuff to do in the Mission District.

I visited the Women’s Building to check out the murals on the afternoon of July 28th, my first day of seven in San Francisco.
The Women’s Building was located on 18th Street between Valencia and Guerrero Streets, in the Mission District. It is a non-profit community centre that advocates for social justice and gender equality and offers resources and a safe place to stay for women.
The building was covered with beautiful, colourful and detailed murals of inspiring women throughout history, which were impressive and provided great photo opportunities.
I encourage you to read about the history of the building and the murals, as it is very interesting. There are also walking tours that visit this building and would probably be able to offer more background information about the history as well.
The Women’s Building is definitely a must-see in the Mission District!
