According to Wikipedia, Sue Bierman Park was also known as Ferry Park and was named after Sue Bierman, a San Francisco civic activist and Supervisor.
The park was constructed in front of the San Francisco Ferry Building, which itself was remodeled into an upscale gourmet marketplace in 2003.
The 5.3 acres of land that currently make up the Park (formerly Ferry Park) previously served as on-ramps and off-ramps for the Embarcadero Freeway. The freeway was demolished after being damaged by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
The park is an open area of green in the middle of the concrete and asphalt of San Francisco's Financial District... a place to enjoy a little bit of nature and sun (on good days).
It is also an area that you could find the homeless camping.

Sculptures, gardens, commuters, visitors, and homeless people share this space. The blooming plants add beautiful colors. This is a wonderful shortcut if you are heading to the Metro Station from the piers. If you have the time or inclination, take photos of the gorgeous plants.

Kids were a bit big for the park, but would be good for younger children. Around the park though, there were lots of homeless people sleeping during the day.

This park is great for locals or tourists to take a break in. And, touring families with kids will love the innovative playground, because the kids never want to take a break.
This is the kind of civic project that enhances life in the city for everyone.

This lovely new playground is a great spot for your kids to get their wiggles out. Lots of climbing structures. Activities for different age groups.

This is a nice park across the Embarcadero from the Ferry Building. One interesting (Korean) statue but otherwise just a quiet park for sitting and enjoying lunch. Pictures tell it all.
PS: there is a lovely playground for kids to play it.

This playground is across the street from the Ferry Building and an easy street car ride from the Warf and Pier 39. Our 3 & 5 year old LOVED IT and requested to go back each day we were in SF. It provided a nice break from all the activities and walking and sightseeing, us "big people" like to do. Plus the Ferry Building offers great food choices so we timed it mid-day to enjoy lunch as well.
