I haven't done very many tours in my life, but Rick Garland did an amazing job giving me my first tour of Harper's Ferry. My boyfriend and I went and couldn't quit talking about what a great job Rick did. He's great about not walking you to death, but giving you plenty opportunities to see things on the tour. He... Rick Garland skillfully led and taught 16 of us for 3 hours as he wove his way through several layers of Harpers Ferry history. Combining expert historical knowledge with period songs and anecdotes Mr. Garland kept all of us entertained and informed. If you want to learn both the main stream and the less commonly known history of Harpers Ferry,... More

We had a 4 hour tour with Rick, and it was a wonderful tour. We were coming from Baltimore, and he arranged the tour for a time that would work well for us- which we appreciated!! He had so much knowledge about this history of the town and the part it played during the Civil War, and we enjoyed every... More

Rick is one of the most knowledgeable and fun tour guides I have run across in many years. His knowledge and description of the events that happened in Harpers Ferry including John Brown and the city itself will teach exactly how I believe it happened.

We really enjoyed our time with Rick. He is informed and provocative but open to other opinion. There are clearly plenty of opinions about how Harper's Ferry emerged and also the role in the Civil War. Also plenty of viewpoints about the causes and the outcomes of the Civil War. I think it would be easy to take a walking... More

Simply said, Rick was entertaining and informative - we got a good sense of Harpers Ferry - however, the information he presents on the cause of the Civil War was, for us, the reason we gave him a one rating. He is well read, but in revisionist causes of the Civil War. Now he is truly entitled to his opinion,... More

Wow! Ouch! Some disagreement on one aspect of the tour and you trash the entire rating? Is that really fair? From the moment that 'History' takes place, all that is subsequently 'Written' about it is 'Revisionist, including that of James McPherson's which is why I quoted Abraham Lincoln himself when he said to Congress two months into the war (a... Boy , does Rick Garland ever know his history!!! He took my husband and I on a very well informed tour of harpers ferry. Just going there without knowing any history about the town, to me would have been noneventful. just would have been looking at buildings that didn't have any meaning. We were still talking about some of the... More

I was very happy that my husband and I took this tour. It was very informative and enjoyable. My husband is older and I was afraid he could not handle the walk but he did fine there was a lot of stopping so that the history could be told it was great a must do if you are in harpers... More

THE BEST!!!!!! Ric, the tourguide does not mingle religion or personal beliefs- he leaves the theory of ghosts up to you- but he has some ideas.....! the tour is very informative and a little creepy- he is a "costumed" guide, wearing Civil War era clothing. It is awesome. Book early as it fills up in Fall!

Well worth the money spent, Rick provided a lot of historical background. My son, who is a history buff, found it excellent. I love history, but I found that we spent a lot of time sitting still and listening, which isn't my cup of tea. Also, he made a few comments about women and a few about religion that made... More
