You can see some amazing rock formations while driving, or take a short hike to to see the arches, and it does not take up any time and provide a nice break from driving.

It's a long road traveling to the Needles District but will worth a drive and experiencing the Needles District as part of Canyonlands.

The drive there is scenic and well worth it because the "needles district" is much different than the "Island in the Sky" district or Arches. Fill up before you leave the Moab area because it's a good 50+ plus miles between gas stations.

This part of Canyonlands offers better vistas than the northern part. There is truly a different vibe about this part of Canyonlands and, to me anyway, more interesting scenery.

It is a long distance from Moab (or anywhere else). Lots of history in the area. There are still signs of "cowboy encampments" and Indian petroglyphs. If your lucky, you may see some life in the potholes

Needles is about 1.5 hours drive southeast of Moab. Another beautiful park, but unless you have a high-clearance 4WD and are a serious backpacker there are only 3 hikes you can take. We spent a leisurely 2+ hours on Sliprock Foot Trail and enjoyed it...More
