This was a great way to see another side of Boston and learn some specular history. We took the Black History Trail walking tour around Boston and joined a motley bunch of tourist, all of us were a little uncertain about what to expect. We certainly got the unexpected; Boston's history of revolution, protest and change popped out of pavements,... More

A walking trip around Boston with sights and stop offs. Pop it on any itinerary for a couple of hours - see some lovely buildings

I was disappointed. We ended up arriving at the museum at 4 pm and could not get a guided tour. We walked the trail ourselves and quickly became bored looked at the outside of buildings. Thankfully we had the brochure and a Jr Ranger booklet to provide more background.

This is an important part of American history and too few people spend time learning this part of our history. The park service ranger was incredibly knowledgeable and he took time explaining the intricacies of this time (mostly civil war and beyond, but some revolutionary war too) for people brought over from Africa as slaves. From the statue on the... More

This is a free tour conducted by the National Park Service and was excellent. Our park ranger, Emily was very informative and engaging as she took us through Beacon Hill and spoke at all sites, ending at the museum. I learned many facts, names and events - it was an enlightening experience.

We had heard a rumour of a guided tour of the black history trail, so we hung around outside the state house for a while and were approached by a lovely park ranger named Michael, who it turned out was our tour guide. The tour ended up being just the three of us and one other person, which was nice... More

This tour is led by a national park ranger and there is no cost. It takes about two hours and is a walking tour through two or three neighborhoods near downtown Boston. The history, and information given by the ranger is entertaining and very informative.

We did this trail on our own because we missed the tour. It was informative and fun to weave through the old streets of Beacon Hill. The area is visually fabulous and steeped in well preserved original historical detail. A great way to spend a few hours not only getting a feel for old Boston but learning about its Black... More

This tour is all about the abolitionist movement in Boston and how it intertwines with the history of the black people (African Americans) living in Boston. The ranger is very very knowledgeable and can answer questions. The tour ends at the former African American Church/meeting house which is now part of a museum. Highly recommended.

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
The largest area of the city, Downtown is rich with historical and iconic sites in Boston. Stroll through one of Boston’s most famous green spaces, the Boston Public Gardens, check out and make way for duckling statues, picnic under a beautiful tree overlooking the pond, and walk over the iconic footbridge where, during summer time, you will catch a swan boat toting children and eager tourists through the pond. Have your camera ready to capture its peaceful beauty in the middle of a bustling city. Continue on through the Gardens and take in some open green space at the Boston Common, where you can spend time throwing a frisbee, sitting on a park bench, or, in the winter time, skating on the frog pond. Head north from the end of the Common to see the golden dome of the State House, and travel through government center to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, both a historic and popular destination worth a quick visit for a first time to Boston. Head to Long Wharf to visit the Aquarium, or catch a boat to Charlestown or even Cape Cod.
