I was able to attend daily mass at St. Joseph, a lovely Mission Revival cathedral. The interior is relatively simple, but warm and welcoming. It's a pretty easy walk from almost anywhere in Downtown San Diego.

As we approached it looked increasingly magnificent, gleaming white in the brilliant morning sunshine. A fine belfry soars heavenwards complimenting other decorative features. Grand red steps lead the ascent to the entrance.

The beauty continues within. Standing at the rear the vista along the nave is awe-inspiring. Ornate columns and arches lead to the attractive altar area. A sculptural image of the Last Supper adorns the altar.

Much lovely statuary is throughout, including one of Pope John Paul II and Mother Theresa. Stained glass is gorgeous, luminous and hopeful.

A grand organ is in an elevated area above the entrance. Admirable wood craft is to the fore in the impressive dark ceiling.

Moderately sized Cathedral, pretty traditional. In very nice condition. I was here for Assumption and it was a very nice mass.

We walked to the Cathedral from our hotel (Hampton Inn Downtown) straight up Beach St. Went to daily Mass at 12:07p.m. -- not sure why the "odd" time, but it's not a misprint. The church is very beautiful without being ostentatious. Very nice side shrines to various saints. This is the Cathedral church of the (Roman Catholic) Diocese of San Diego.

St Joseph Cathedral, located in downtown San Diego, is beautifully designed featuring very high wooden ceilings, a lovely stain glass window featuring St Joseph and the child Jesus, with a number of smaller side altars including Our Lady of Guadalupe among others.

There is free parking conveniently located across the street during masses. Well worth a visit.

This was an amazing experience. The statues and stained glass windows are a must see. Earlier reviews have already described these.Another thing to look at in awe is the wooden roof.
The unique part is the rest rooms located below the church. And very close to them are prayer benches with a view of the altar, possibly to facilitate senior citizens who would find it difficult to walk lond distances.

My husband and I attend Mass at St Joseph Cathedral at the 10:30 service on Sunday. There is a wonderful choir that sings and an angel of a soloist with an exquisite voice.
This church has been getting more beautiful over the past few years. The stained glass windows are gorgeous and were created in San Diego in 1941. Amazing that they were made locally. The hand-carved statues of the saints were made in Italy. There is a recent addition of a statue of Sts Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II, friends in life, together in an almost life sized sculpture.
Father Patrick Mulcahy is the pastor. He gives excellent homilies. Associate pastor Father Clement from Nigeria always has a way of letting you see life through his insightful experiences.
We go to 7:00 am Mass during the week and love the more intimate interaction between priest and people.
Every month a free movie is shown in the church auditorium- movies like “Brooklyn,” “The Light Between the Oceans,” and sometimes more directly religious topics. There is discussion after. This parish offers a lot of ways for adults to become enriched.

I went to a Saturday evening mass and it was about a 15 minute walk from my gaslamp hotel. Nice mass with good music and friendly people.

What a change! This stately old church has undergone a transformation that got rid of the old, drab carpeting and exposed beautiful wooden floors. This just brightened the whole place. There are several niches around the church with statues of various saints carved in wood. In the rear of the church is a statue of Pope John Paul standing with St Mother Teresa. It is so beautiful. Again, carved in wood. Father Pat gives excellent sermons that apply the gospel to everyday life. This has been our parish for years, but it truly has become alive since Fr Pat came. There are many new ministries ( see excellent new parish website) and it is multicultural too. The new choir sings on Sunday and Lisa the soloist sings like she just stepped down from heaven. They really add a lot to the celebration of the Mass.
