Good old fashioned haint

I enjoy legit haunted places (with a group and employees present) so this was cool to me. I do realize that without someone directing you with a little flare that it IS just an old house with information to read about. It's some fun among other things to do in the Old Town district of San Diego, though.

Wish we had taken a tour guide led tour
Feb. 2020
Our family went here after seeing it on several "ghost shows" on television. The history of the building itself is interesting, but at least our tour was self-guided. We were given a piece of paper with the history of each room, but it felt anti-climactic. Employees were there and available for questions and stories, but had to be asked. Maybe some people enjoy exploring on their own, but I would have preferred a guided tour by an experienced tour guide.

Tickets were $10 (discounts for people over 55) and are purchased at the building next to the Whaley House. You'll also want to visit the cemetery down the street where Yankee Jim is buried.

It was interesting
Feb. 2020
This place was cramped and dark. I think that they deliberately keep it dark in here because it is supposedly haunted. I wasn't scared. I didn't see a ghost and no ghosts showed up on my camera phone. It's not worth the ten bucks unless your really into this stuff.

Whaley House and museum
Dec. 2019
I was pretty disappointed with the Whaley House because I had been hearing about it for years!! Was looking forward to a ghostly visit because that is the reason I came!! They gave us a piece of paper for us to read and then let us loose to wander around on our own. No talk about the "ghosts" or anything. Took about 10 minutes to go through the rooms and saw nothing but old furniture. The museum next door was the highlight of the visit because of the cute dolls of Edgar Allen Poe and Nikola Tesla and the nice lady that we talked to. Also, it is situated on a cool street right in the midst of Old San Diego so all was not lost. Had a blast walking up and down the street where it was situated. I would recommend for the location not the house.

Total dud

This may well be the greatest waste of time and money in all of San Diego. I don't think that we spent more than 15 or 20 minutes in this place, and it wasn't the least bit interesting.

Haunted History
Sep. 2019
Having read about and watched documentaries on the history around the Whaley House, it was on my list of places to see while in San Diego. The property is well-kept and offers a self-guided tour with docents throughout the property offering tidbits of information based on the questions of the visitors. Did we experience any ghosts? No. But was it cool hearing the stories. Yes!

Should still be free
Dec. 2019
This is supposedly the most haunted house in America, according to at least one t.v. show. I stumbled on this attraction by accident and since they were giving a senior citizen discount, decided to give it a try. The house is pretty cool. It has a courtroom, theater, and general store inside, and it's only a regular size house. There was nothing about the tour that gave me any indication the house is haunted. It's just a cool old house. I was told that self guided tours were free until it hit the t.v. Now they charge $10. ($8 with my discount) It only takes a few minutes to go through the house. Not really worth more than a dollar or two - and that only to see a cool old house. If you are looking for ghosts, I don't think you will find them here. Except for the hype.

The Whaley House
Dec. 2019 • Family
The Whaley house is located in Old Town San Diego! The house was built on ground where they use to hang people. This house is known to be haunted. It took us maybe 20 minutes to go through the house! We did not witness any ghost!

No ghosts but a lot of history
Dec. 2019
The Whaley House is world famous both for its architecture and, of all things, ghosts. It was completed in 1857, constructed from bricks made from Whaley’s own brickyard. It is the first two story structure in San Diego. To enter and tour the house, it’s necessary to purchase tickets that range from $ 8.00- $.10.00. Upon entering visitors are given a 4 page handout that tells that about the rooms they are about to see. Unfortunately, the handout has so much information that it’s impossible to read it while walking through the house. (I read it upon returning home.) Although the house is filled with historic artifacts, the full understanding of them is not possible because it’s too detailed in the handout. There were definitely no ghosts or ghost-like episodes during my tour, likely because the house was extremely crowded with others like myself, wandering from room to room. While it is an interesting thing to see in San Diego, I was quite disappointed, found the entrance price to be a tad high, and the lack of narration during my visit to be disappointing. Some signage in each room would have greatly facilitated the experience. I’d strongly advise those considering going to read up on Whaley and the history of his home prior to visiting the Whaley house.
