This was the only 'paid' museum we visited at Balboa park and what a good choice it was. The displays are incredible and what was especially good was to see new displays being build- what an incredible amount of work goes into the design and build. We could have stayed there all day!

I am a train lover and try to visit model railroad related places wherever I travel. This is about the best. Size alone doesn't tell the full story. The display goes on and on and on and is truly amazing. One of the things that I was most intrigued by was the "behind the scenes" aspect of the museum. The... More

If you enjoy history, or fine modeling, or just appreciate things executed at a world-class level, you need to see this astonishing place. It's not a kid's museum, although kids certainly love it. There are multiple model railroads: two in HO scale, one N scale, one O scale, and a "tinplate" or Lionel room for traditional toy trains. All are... More

This is a great museum to visit if you have an interest in model trains. It is located at Balboa Park so there are lots of other museums to see in the same area. It would be an excellent place to take your grand-kids if they have any interest in trains. They have multiple train layouts that are quite impressive.

Use Go City Card app to get bundled discounts. Bundled this stop in our package and was definitely NOT disappointed. We spent over 2 hours looking at the displays and watching the trains, but I know we missed some interesting stuff. There's so much going on. The train club volunteers on duty were very helpful and informative.

If you are a model railroad buff, this museum has several large layouts in different gauges. Easy to see all the action. The hobbyists on site are friendly and helpful. Great location in Balboa Park on the Prado.

Nice layouts, but lacked staff the day we visited hence the lack of trains operating. The few operators that were there that day were friendly and informative. Nice place to take a youngster or adult to get them interested in the hobby.

It's free but donations are realllly appreciated. These guys have it all set up to capture everyone's interest. What a massive display, goes on for rooms. They even have little steps for the little ones to get a good look.

I love looking at the model railroad layouts. I enjoyed all the details. It has multiple rooms of different model railroad clubs. Some are in progress which I like so you can really get an idea of the work and details that go into these layouts. Visited here with my older parent. It has nice easy access with nice gentle...
