The final resting place of President Ulysses Simpson Grant and his wife, Julia, is the largest mausoleum in North America. It testifies to a people's gratitude for the man who ended the bloodiest conflict in American history as Commanding General of the Union Army and then, as President of the United States, strove to heal a nation after a civil war and make rights for all citizens a reality.

Overlooking the Hudson River and near the beautiful Riverside Church, this national monument is well worth of visit if you're in this part of town, that is, Morningside Heights which includes the campuses of Columbia University and Barnard College. Architecturally the monument and tomb are...More

This is a very impressive memorial to a forgotten president. The building itself is magnificent Classical Greek architecture. Inside it looks like a temple with the two large graves on a lower level. We had a great experience listening to the U.S. forest ranger who...More

This was a really interesting Memorial! First of all, it was beautiful - really a stunning monument. But mainly I learned a lot about President Grant that I had not known before. I definitely recommend checking this out, but don't just walk in look around,...More

Similar in style to Napoleon's tomb in Paris the range was quick to point out that was where the similarities between General Grant and Napoleon ended. Set in a nice park next to the Hudson River the memorial is an appropriate tribute to a visionary...More

The tomb and memorial is very nice. The tomb is a huge building, and you can walk around the main floor and lower level wth the caskets. There isn't a whole lot to see though. Across the street is the visitor center. It's very small...More

First of all, beware the odd opening times as it isn't open to continuously or every day. We started in the visitor centre which is across the road and watched a short film about Grant's life. Well worth it as we knew so little. The...More

Outstanding to view as you approach. Upon entering the main level you take several steps to look down upon the resting place of President Grant and his wife through a large, circular balcony type opening in the center of the structure. There are several flags...More

Very cool place. It's also very old. I can't remember when it was built. You can walk down into the tomb where Grant and his wife are buried.
