We had never before visited this fine museum telling the story of New York City from 1609 to the present, and that was our loss. I love history and maps and there are plenty of each here...but not so much that your eyes glaze over and you can't wait to leave. the main exhibit now is the photography and life... More

Frankly there is a dearth of artefacts in what could be a really interesting museum. The staff are charming and they have on a photographic collection illustrating the poverty of yesteryear and an exhibition by an ex-graffiti come mainstream artist of rather unappealing works. I reckon the curators have lost the plot. Where are the exhibits I asked? In store... More

If you want to know more about the history of New York, this museum is the right place for you. There is a short film (22 minutes) which takes you through the city's history and several chaning exhibitions - all of them worth your time. As it is not one of the big arts museums you will not be trampled... More

This was my first time here, as this was a nice gift from a long time friend! I can't say I would visit this museum again but it was a decent experience. In my opinion, this wasn't art - it was more like a showcase of "semi-important" photographs of historic events that took place in NYC. However, I did get... More

The Museum of the City of New York is one of the handful of good attractions at Museum Mile on 5th Avenue. This museum was founded in 1923 and is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the city and its people. Opening Hours are 10-6pm daily, this is a place for those who want to dive into NYC... More

I primarily visit the Museum if the city of NY, because I wanted to see the "Jakob A. Riis" and "NY marathon" exhibitions. They were only average. They were not that big and therefore not much to see. I prefer exhibitions which go into deep with the art, but in this case I am disappointed. I would have liked to... More

We watched the video about the growth of the city and it was very informative. Then we visited the displays on the rich and the poor. The wealthy of the gilded age had paintings, jewelry, expensive furnishings. Photos of the poor showed how little they had and all they had to share.

I have read a few things about this museum and I figured I would give it a shot. At $14 (suggested price) and being up around 102nd street in the city it was a little trek from brooklyn. This is a small museum that tells the history of nyc. If you are visiting nyc and know little about nyc (and... More

It's fair to say that this is not one of the better known museums in NYC, and it's a bit remote (all the way up on 103rd street). But it's definitely worth the schlep. The rotating exhibits evoke the amazing richness of the culture and history of the city. The highlight of the visit was the "Folk City" exhibit on... More

My friend found out about this musuem because of an exhibit they were having at Christmastime about Magic Lanterns. Along with the exhibit they hosted an event where they told Christmas stories and sang carols. It ended up being really fun for kids and adults alike, and a great value for the cost. Would definitely look into future events when... More
