About
St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of New York and the seat of its Archbishop. Built by contributions large and small, it remains emblematic of the ascendance of religious freedom in the New World. As such, this international landmark is a beacon of hope for those who share the Catholic faith and a source of inspiration to the more than five million visitors of every religious denomination welcomed here each year. St. Patrick’s Cathedral has stood strong, overlooking 5th Ave, since 1879. The vibrancy of its windows, the beauty of its music and the purpose of its charitable outreach call us to respond to our shared humanity. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is a must see destination when visiting New York. Our tour has been crafted to capture the essence of the church. It addresses the rich history of the past and the incredible art and architecture that makes it one of a kind. Timothy Cardinal Dolan, narrates the tour with Monsignor Robert Ritchie.

This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. - The Trusty Trip Gal!England, United Kingdom244 contributionsGreat To See In Person!I always have seen this Cathedral in movies! We was on our way up to Central Park Zoo but we took another route so we would pass the Cathedral on the way by! It is a stunning building outside! I would of loved to have seen it inside but didn’t have time to get round to it! Would definitely go inside next time!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023
- NikaNumber1Royal Oak, Michigan10,141 contributionsGorgeous cathedralIt’s big and cavernous. A lot of blind spots to the alter. I see why there are TV screens. Beautiful details on the columns, the stained glass is gorgeous and the relief depictions are so amazingly detailed. Lots of smaller alters on each side of the cathedral, since the main alter is blocked off for prayers.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 4, 2023
- Louis FAltus, Oklahoma1,247 contributionsGorgeousGorgeous Cathedral with plenty of alcoves to check out. It was busy but I didn’t feel packed in. Worth checking out even if you aren’t religious. It is free to enter although there are donation boxes if you feel inclined.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten November 10, 2023
- Nick CrealWhiteley, United Kingdom164 contributionsAn unexpected gemWas up early one morning and had seen the cathedral in the guide book and thought that it would be worth an explore. The building was vast and there was a daily service going on every 30 minutes which was interesting to listen to while walking around the outside of the inside of the building. The architecture was spectacular and worth a visitVisited December 2022Travelled soloWritten November 28, 2023

- Love2travel19892LaSalle, Canada887 contributionsWow!!! And FREE!St Patrick’s cathedral is a MUST to see while in NY. It is a 2 minute walk from the Rockefeller center and a true piece of history - absolutely beautiful. You can walk in and look around at no cost or you can book a tour. Our time was limited so we just walked in and looked around. Very easy to find and walk through.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 16, 2023
- Kelly FNorth Attleboro, Massachusetts129 contributionsA beautiful in-depth walk through the cathedralThis was a well paced walk through the cathedral, guided by a seminarian who was incredibly well versed in the history of the cathedral. Since it was just the 3 of us, we could stop, ask questions, and share our observations together. We went into the crypt and onto the main alter and talked about several of the beautiful small alters that line both side walls. Anthony showed us pictures and drawings from the archives of the early days of the cathedral to give us some perspective compared to the surroundings today. Although we’ve been to the cathedral before, this gave us a wonderful new view of an iconic New York landmark.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 4, 2024

We went on Friday, March 8, in the early evening. You can enter the church and take puctures. It is the largest gothic cathedral in the western hemisphere. It's beautiful inside. You can lite a candle in a few different areas and there is plenty of seating.

This cathedral is a landmark and really must be seen when visiting NYC and looking to cover the iconic places. Walk around the whole block, go inside if possible, and then wander across the street to take it all in - old world architecture surrounded and dwarfed by towering glass and steel.

We were going to Rockefeller Center when we spotted St. Patrick's Cathedral. We just had to go in. The Cathedral is a Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic Church right off Fifth Avenue. We did not take a tour and there was no admission. When we entered, a priest was officiating a Mass and we stayed. People were either listening to the Mass, or were walking around looking at the architectural beauty of the Cathedral and taking pictures. We could just imagine the history of the Cathedral and how many people it had welcomed, including the rich and famous. We were able to light a candle under any saint we chose. It was definitely a spiritual experience.

Anywhere I travel, I always find a church and light a candle for my mum.
In my own way it feels like she’s visiting with me!
St Patrick’s is the most beautiful cathedral, almost feels out of place amongst all of the high end shops and hustle and bustle of New York City.
Exterior and interior beautiful, peaceful, calming and charming, not like some overboding morbid type cathedrals.
I purchased a couple of things from the gift shop, and lit a couple of candles.
Simply beautiful.

I'm planning to visit the cathedral while in NYC. I'm interested in buying a guided tour, but I was wondering if it's possible to not buy it online but when I'm at the church. Can I do that? Or necessarily I need to buy it online?
Written April 22, 2021
If you have a smartphone, you can download the tour to your smartphone when you get to NYC and take the tour. Here is more information about the tour is available at the St Patrick's Cathedral Website.

Which Sunday mass is best to go to? Site lists Sunday masses at 7, 8, 9, 10:15, 12, and 9 and 12 say music, 10:15 says choir. Is there no music at 7 and 8? Is the choir best or music best experience?
Written February 18, 2020
Not sure about music at the early masses. The choir is amazing and the cathedral offers such a lovely sounding board and resonance that you get chills. You feel surrounded in music. Also applies for just organ music. I think it’s personal preference. In my opinion you can’t go wrong with either. Such a beautiful way to celebrate our Lord!
