Thanks for visiting Big Apple Jazz Tours! Since 1997 we have been on the front lines of the underground New York City jazz scene - taking small groups down into the basements and alleyways where live jazz still thrives in neighborhood nightclubs from Harlem to Greenwich Village. Legendary players and clubs as well.

All live music and transportation costs are included in the tour price. Our jazz tours take place in Manhattan for the most part, but private tours to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx can be arranged.

Our goal is to offer the most intimate, small group tours available to Harlem and Greenwich Village neighborhood nightclubs and juke joints. We also provide insight into the Big Apple jazz scene as it has evolved over the past hundred years.

Consider hiring Gordon Polatnick to take you on a private tour throughout the city during the day or night to experience the city's many intriguing neighborhoods at your pace and focusing on your interests.

Amanda met us in Manhattan and guided our way up to Harlem on the subway. We visited three terrific jazz joints, everything set up for us to enjoy a set of good music along with great food and drink. Amanda is not only a tour guide, she's part of the entertainment. At times, she got up on stage and sang... More

We thoroughly enjoyed 2 of our 3 stops at jazz joints in Harlem. The first stop, Red Rooster, had great music downstairs and just ok food, but it was a very yuppie-ish place; not the old time atmosphere we expected. The second stop, Showmans, was the best place. It is a small, but comfortable old time jazz bar; felt like... More

We, that is my musician son and I, together with our American hosts, enjoyed a fantastic time on our Harlem Juke Joint tour. The three venues each offered different experiences; accessible, enjoyable jazz, food to suit the night and locations which we certainly wouldn't have seen without Gordon's knowledge. We felt welcomed in each place and heard a range of... More

We chose a private tour thinking we would have an exciting, informative tour. While Gordon was friendly, it seemed we were just there to pay for his entry fees and drinks while he took photos of musicians. At the first club we wasted 30 minutes waiting for the music to start (we would have come later if we had been... More

Please be assured that I am taking your critique to heart and will make certain that my future private tour guests benefit from your words. I strive and usually succeed in creating tailored experiences that far exceed expectations. Clearly, on the night of your tour, I missed the mark completely and you feel aggrieved. I am glad you enjoyed the... More

Gordon is a living encyclopaedia of the history of Jazz in New York. His tours will take you to traditional Jazz venues as well as interesting, off beat bars that you would never find on your own. I have been on a Big Apple Jazz tour on three of my four visits to New York and I always learn something... More

Amanda is the best, great history of the Harlem night spots. We were a small group which afford us to be front and center at the two night clubs we visited, the music was fantastic. Susan

We did a Sunday night in Harlem with Gordon, another couple from the U.K. And one from Australia. Gordon knew exactly how to bring us together but not force too much interaction. We had one club where we sat together and three where each couple sat in our own dyiad. Gordon's live for Harlem and jazz is infectious. We learned... More

Gordon is a true Jazz expert and enthusiast and when you book a tour with him, an unforgettable NYC Jazz experience is guaranteed. I booked the Harlem Juke Joints Tour which will give you a chance to see the variety of Harlem's Jazz clubs and to experience the rebirth of Harlem's jazz scene. You don't need to be a jazz... More

Thanks Scott! We challenge ourselves nightly to get this kind of appreciation. If you could find these clubs yourself we'd look even harder to make sure we impressed you with something even more off-the-beaten-path. Some places are already written about on the Internet, but when you get there, you're not quite sure you're at the right place or that you'd... More

I'd never would have thought that I would enjoy a tour in which jazz is centralized. We went on this tour for my stepfather, since he is a great fan of jazz music. We did not expect a tour guide like Amanda whom clearly loves what she does and knows a great deal about not only the jazz scene, but... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
