The Merchant's House Museum is New York City's only 19th century home preserved intact, with original family furnishings and personal belongings.A unique survivor of Old New York, the House offers a rare and intimate glimpse of how a prosperous merchant family and their Irish servants lived from 1835 to 1865, when New York grew from seaport to thriving metropolis."The distinction of the Merchant's House -- and it is a powerful one -- is that it is the real thing. One simply walks through the beautiful doorway into another time and place in New York."The New York Times

Fabulous venue and exceptional notes for a self guided tour. Volunteers are lovely and passionate about what they do. It's a credit to the Tredwell family for retaining the property until it's transformation into a museum. A must see house if you ar visiting NYC. Anne Ingram Australia

The Merchant House Mus brings you back to another era. Most of the furnishings are original- 1830's . There is a choice of organized or self tour with a detailed book. I choose the self tour. I spent over an hour viewing the family room, kitchen, bedrooms and maids quarters. There is a small but beautiful and peaceful garden in... More

The Merchants House Museum is a little gem. It is a fascinating and lovely trip back in time. The house an furnishings are well preserved and well laid out. There is a well done guide book to accompany you if you do not take a tour. Expect to spend no more than an hour here.

Maybe it was the woman who conducted the tour, but the Merchant's House Museum didn't seem that interesting, despite viewing original artifacts and furnishing from that era. The guide had to peak to a large group and didnt project her voice very well, so I missed some information. The Treadwell family was not very distinguished, other than they were wealthy,... More

I just visited this small jewel set on a side street in lower Manhattan. The home has been very well preserved. The descendants of the long time occupants preserved most of the original rooms, including furnishings and personal belongings. Astounding that even 19 th century dresses are still there and are displayed. For a real taste of upper class lives... More

We read about this little museum and wanted to visit it because it is reported to be haunted. Regrettably, we didn't get to see any of the ghostly inhabitants, but the museum itself gives an amazing "screenshot" of life in the mid 19th century. Guests are given a binder upon entering which allows a self-guided tour and provides an explanation... More

We were lucky enough to stumble onto a behind the ropes tour. Our guide went way over time, but it was so worth it! Anthony was a treasure with so much information to share. Loved that we were able to go on all the floors and to experience so much of the house.

We went to the Merchant House Museum today and it was fabulous. A fascinating insight into high society life in the 19th century in New York. Wonderful building and contents. Could really imagine life passing by. Extremely helpful and knowledgable volunteers answered our questions and more. Definitely worth a visit.

Amazing example of 1850 NYC architecture with the original(!) furniture and decor. The kind of place that makes you want to learn more. Highly recommended if you have any interest in wealthy NYC history & architecture.
