If you walk a block past the busiest junction of Broadway and Times Square and turn right - you are on the 42nd Street, and it is also very busy. A lot of theaters, restaurants, shops, Madame Tussaud's Museum, the AMC movie theater. Humongous neon ads and constant motion of thousands of people everywhere! Right before the 8th Ave, the... Not just a show but a spot in the interminably busy midtown area which is archetypally NYC the centre of Manhattan. Exceedingly colourful and utterly typical of the locale. Another of the many areas within the city where it's just a great experience to wander around and take in the artmosphere et al.

42nd Street has changed over the years since it was cleaned up of the sex shops. I go to the Roundabouts theatre here. There are plenty of places to eat and it is close to the theatre district. Lots of bright lights here and vendors on the street selling fake goods.

Busy time of year. Was disappointed by the number of panhandlers/homeless that are settled down on side streets of 42nd street. No one seems to do anything about it, full scale mattresses and beds are laid out and some even have dogs!!!

This was around the corner from the hotel and do I went into this area frequently. It is such a nice area full of entertainment , food and bars which are worth a look in. It is such a bright area and the buildings are very tall and overwelming.

There's no way you won't visit this street at least once and probably nearly every day that you're in New York, doing touristy things. Around Times Square it's very busy and lively, lots to see, but walking past that is interesting too, if only to see the contrast as it goes from regular street to highly travelled location.

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on 42nd Street near Times Square. We walked 42nd street numerous times. We enjoyed the sites and stores. It is a definite "too do" if you have never done it.

A bit like LWL3333 below, it is easy to think of 42nd Street as only a couple of blocks around 6th but in reality it is a long street running between Hudson And East Rivers with such a change of character and things to do. In the few blocks though that everyone knows, it is the entertainment centre with theatres,... More

Still one of the fun things to do when you are visiting the city. Iconic views in the Theater District, still a few great delis where you can stop in for lunch & lots of places to just watch the people go by. Quintessential NY... busy, neon, quick, bright, food!

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
