Visited Arthur ave for the first time. Just casually walked into this butcher shop and was surprised. I felt that I walked back into another era! They have just about anything you can imagine. Butchers who are friendly, very knowledgeable and a delight to chat with. I bought some meats and was so impressed with the quality that I have become a regular. They deliver to my home! Wonderful!!

I could not have thought of a more fitting title!! I happen to enjoy Italy and pizza and cannolis and mob movies!! It is all very fancy but I have no money to be going to Italy!! I went to this market today because I wanted to look at it!! It had a ton of stores but I didn’t buy anything!! It also had some interesting novelty pictures which I will add to my collection of weird things I’ve seen!! The stores had pastas and sauce and cannolis and pizza but there was no mobsters which was good for me!!

The Arthur Avenue Retail Market is an old world Italian market with traditional butchers, grocery and fruit areas that remind you of the old country. The old scales and piles of bits and fruit brought back memories.

Visiting the Arthur Ave Retail Market and the "Belmont" section of the Bronx is a walk back in time to the 1950's and 60's in NYC.
There are about 35 "mom and pop" shops with delicious food and fantastic prices. One is more delicious than the next- cheese shops, pastry and bread shops, fresh pasta and restaurants. A great way to navigate the neighborhood is to take a food tasting tour- SusanSez NYC Walkabouts is highly recommended. While up there visit the NY Botanical Gardens and/or The Bronx Zoo

Even though I no longer live in the area I still make a pilgrimage back to the Bronx once a year. The Market has been updated. Most of the same vendors are still there. You can get hand rolled cigars, fresh produce, great butcher shop and of course Mike's Deli. They have every kind of italian cold cuts. Fresh made, on the premises, mozzarella. Delicious. Of course there are tables to sit and enjoy their deli sandwiches on crusty italian sub rolls. I always get the eggplant parmigiana sub. Terrific. It's so great that it was voted better than Bobby Flays on the food networks "Throw Down With Bobby Flay". While on Arthur Ave be sure to visit the bakeries and restaurants and gift shops. On 187th St. don't forget to buy some of the most delicious Italian bread at Terranova Bakery. Still made in brick ovens, this bread has the greatest crust ever. Also, right in the area is the Bronx Zoo, The N.Y. Botanical Gardens as well as Fordham University. A full day or two of vacationing. Do watch the parking meters and the no parking signs which can get confusing.. They are strickly enforced and illegal parking can cost you $65 and up.

On our tour of Arthur Ave. Little Italy we did visit the market. It was like no place I have been to before. My husband and I both enjoy going to farmers markets in all places we vacation at. But this market was amazing g. The people that run it are so friendly, the foods they sell are authentic as well as imported goods from Italy. We stayed there at least an hour and a half. Best market anywhere. It’s a must see.

This is perhaps the best artisan food neighborhood in New York City. The retail market is a great place to shop -- terrific vegetables and a great butchers -- but it's the surrounding area that is the real gem.
I defy anybody to challenge Teitel Brothers deli for the value or the variety of Italian food. If it's coffee, fresh fish, butchers, home made pasta or restaurants (Dominick's, Zero Otto Nove, Roberto's -- just to name my favorites) or bakeries (Is Madonia Brothers the best Italian bakery in North America?) or home made mozzarella (Casa Della Mozzarella) -- this area a treasure.
I am a big fan of Eataly in Manhattan but Arthur Avenue is the real deal, as authentic a neighborhood as you'll get and prices that are generally less than half of what you'll pay downtown.

My girlfriend wanted to visit the "Little Italy" of the Bronx. Walked along Arthur Avenue and stopped into the market. Unfortunately, many vendors were closed. You can read my separate review about Mike's Deli where we split a sandwich. The man at La Casa Grande Cigars was very nice, telling us about the area, and the places he enjoyed eating. When walking the neighborhood, make sure you walk along 187th street as well. I'm a Brooklyn girl, so I don't get impressed with bakeries. What I was most impressed with was Borgatti's Ravioli & Egg Noodles on 187th. Purchased several types of pasta. My family and I really enjoyed their pasta and Pumpkin Ravioli. It's a must stop!

We stopped at the new Pasticceria in the market and bought cupcakes for our grand daughter's birthday. They were VERY expensive at $4 each but looked nice and we thought that she'd like them. When we got them home that evening to celebrate, we found that they were VERY stale with a poor taste. The icing was hard. A $4 cupcake should be of better quality and fresh!

What is the best way to get to Arthur Ave. from the Port Authority in New York City?

Best way to travel from Times Square to Arthur's avenue market?
Written September 9, 2017
There are a variety of ways to go.
1. As the previous poster said, you can take Metro North from Grand Central Station to the Fordham Road and walk.
Grand Central is the S subway line from Times Square, heading east. Arthur Avenue is just off Fordham Road East.
2. You can take the subway the whole way. Take the 1, 2, or 3 train north from Times Square to 59th Street. Change to the D line to Fordham Road. This is the cheapest way.
3. Take an Uber or a taxi. Should be $30 USD each way. Good choice if you are a small group or have young kids.
