Neighbourhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighbourhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighbourhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.

The Jefferson Market library is an excellent building from the outside but very run down inside. The gardens beside it are nice. Worth a photo of the facade.

This was a very disappointing stop during our New York City trip from Maryland. In the pouring rain, we made our way to see this library, only to find out that the 2nd and 3rd floors were closed for renovations. It would have been nice if they had put that information on their website. So, the only rooms we could see were the children’s room on the main level and the lower level that had books for adults.

People working here are nice. The place is quite and warm in winter. We came here in a sunny yet cold winter morning and the stained glasses caught the sun light and we were in awe. I do wish this place has a bathroom for patrons to use. It's not convenient to have to go to the coffee shops to use the rest room every hour.

Wonderful that this splendid landmark with its Venetian Gothic style spires and turrets was saved from destruction by dedicated local campaigners. In the past, the tower had a bell to warn of fire. It was a court house for a period but now has been converted into a library. We sat for a while in the charming reading room on the top floor to contemplate and plan for the rest of the day. It was pretty full and the atmosphere was a blend of quiet relaxation and industrious effort. Good to see it is so popular and well used.

The only reason I'm not giving terrible is because of the unique building and Sunday hours I have been in dozens of libraries in Manhattan and several in Brooklyn and Queens and have never come across one that had a children's bathroom but no adult bathroom. It is a PUBLIC library and I find that outrageous. I'm all for libraries that have the space to have a separate children's one to do so for safety but if you only have one library for the public then it should be for everyone.

We came here on a geocaching mission and were again happily surprised to find some amazing local culture. This library was a 19th Century Courthouse, used as such until the 1940s. Like the main courtroom is now an adult reading room. The woodwork and stonework are amazing. The stained glass is stunning and the stairwells and basement definitely give one the feel of a courthouse, not a library. Mae West was prosecuted here for indecency, and was sentenced to time out on Roosevelt Island! The women's prison was actually located next door where the beautiful garden is now located.
Anyway, the architecture on this place is stunning and a reminder of why New York is a top destination! Definitely recommend a visit!

Once a year, the steep winding staircase leading to the top of the Jefferson Market Library's Gothic clock tower opens to the public. Check with the librarian for the date -- the lines are long but worth it.
We enjoyed the climb, the views and most of all chatting with folks while we waited.

I had a few hours to kill between meetings while I was in NY and took advantage of the Jefferson Market Library. It's got a great room downstairs with a lot of very large tables that have power available in them, along with some comfortable chairs along the side walls to sit in (the one I was in did not have power close by, but that was fine). The wifi is really good and it was a perfect spot for me to get some work done for a few hours.
