Being a bit of a rock-hound I was keen to see Obsidian Dome as a quick stop on my San Francisco to Phoenix road trip. There are a lot of volcano sites along that road, but I think Obsidian Dome is the best one. Its...More

Having gone to Mammoth several times this was our first trip to Obsidian Dome and it was amazing! I have two young children 6-9 who were able to do the short hike up the mountain and they loved it.

Easy dirt road drive into a very beautiful environment. It is breathtaking and amazing to see. The road continues up to some very beautiful streams that were wonderful for picnicking. Great 1/2 day trip.

Amazing lava flows from the main volcano vent. Very tall and probably the tallest I've ever seen. Lots of low grade obsidian in huge boulders. Incredible sight to see. I was hoping to find some snow-flake obsidian or pure black onyx dense quality grade billets....More

We went close to sunset and it was a fantastic time to observe the obsidian. The road down is difficult and only recommended for 4-wheel/all-wheel drive. The loop around take about 45 minutes.
