The ground floor has a worthy presentation of the accomplishments of notable African Americans in the city. It takes some time to sit and absorb the exhibit and it is worth it. The next level has notable persons who were instrumental in a variety of ways in the formation of the city. Again, worth the time and the learning. The... More

I was very excited about visiting this museum. It is located in China town. The front desk receptionist was very nice and offered my a military discount which came to about $7.00 (half adult price). As soon as you enter there is a large timeline exhibit which was interesting. It had a voice over that came on and briefly described... More

A rainy day in Central Philly. Lots of visual media on screens yet powerful oil canvas and digital prints. I wanted to buy a tee shirt that looked like a poncho but it wasn't tagged. I encourage you to visit with a photographic memory as photos are prohibited.

We enjoyed hours of history at the informative, African American Museum in Philadelphia, PA. The beautiful sculptures, paintings and especially the many video presentations which were memorable and uplifting. I highly recommend this historical Philly attraction. Enjoy your visit.

I've always wanted to visit the African American museum as I've driven past numerous times. My husband and I were sorely disappointed. Two levels had no exhibits at all and were being painted. We should have been informed when paying admission that this was the case. There is so much history to share and inform the public about that it's... More

Initially, we stopped through Philly to see a couple of attractions, including the Liberty Bell. We stumbled upon the African American Museum and I thought it would be worth taking advantage of the opportunity to expose myself, as well as my 13 and 10-year-old children to some African-American history. Although some of the reviewers were disappointed, we had a positive... More

While in Philly for a convention, we walked around downtown and went to the African American Museum. The Cost was 14.00 for both of us with our AAA discount. The museum had 3 floors that were open and a total of maybe 6 exhibits. While interesting, we kinda expected to see more African American history.

My Children and I have lived in the Philadelphia area for a year now. We have been trying out the museums and attractions in the city because the small town we came from had few to none. Throughout our quest to find museums and educational activities we have tried to visit the African American Museum but were always led elsewhere... More

I have a bucket list of Philly sites that I need to visit, and finally made it to the African American Museum. Besides explaining the role of African Americans in Philadelphia, and thus early American, history on the first floor, this museum also has a wonderful exhibit for children on the 2nd floor which is fun for adults as well.... It's not so much that the museum was small, but there was not a lot of information. The most interesting part was the stories from various African Americans who live in Philadelphia around slavery times. One section of the museum just had quilts. I'm glad I didn't pay full price. We stayed about 1/2 hour.
