- LoJo466Bayville, New Jersey394 contributionsNo pictures pleaseOf course, it’s the Mint! Which was cool! Didn’t expect to be there for an hour on a self guided tour but it was really exciting to see. I loved the fun history and it had good information provided. Too bad that no coins were being made that day. Not sure why but no one around to ask. I guess we have enough loose change circulating, we don’t need any spare. PS if your looking for something In particular, hit the gift shop first. They might not have it in stock.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 10, 2023
- Dean_Amy-2004Gettysburg, Pennsylvania8,399 contributionsFree, Self-Guided TourA free tour available Monday-Friday on non-holidays. No photos are allowed and you may or may not see actual production, but there are numerous touch screens and other information that shows and explains the process very well. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten January 12, 2024
- christopherbO9687MPActon, Massachusetts745 contributionsExcellent tour showing how currency & comparative coins are producedThis United States Mint location provides an excellent self-guided tour showing how our currency & comparative coins are produced inside. Various placards show the multiple steps to design and stamp a new coin design (there's a lot of artwork involved), and then a walking tour in a gallery suspended over the various coin making machines shows how these steps are applied. Most of the machines have placards on them (corresponding with your information about the Mint), so all this starts to make sense as you watch the Mint's staff produce a shipment of new coins. Another nice touch is a history of the Mint, showing how the process of producing coins has evolved since the United States was formed in the 1790s. Famous retired and current Mint staff are also highlighted, so you can see all the education and training necessary to master this craft. There's also an extensive collection of commemorative coins produced at Congress' request over the years. Overall this is an interesting way to see how the Mint works, and a nice break from all the Constitutional history the other nearby museums cover.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten April 24, 2024
- MeryMeCoGalesburg, Illinois935 contributionsThis was one of our favorite tours in PhiladelphiaThe Hop On tour guide recommended a tour of the Mint if we had time. The night before we looked up a video on what goes on there and thought it looked interesting. It was! There was a large group of students waiting as we passed through security but they were long gone by the time we started our self-guided tour. We were the only ones going through and reading the signs and watching them make nickels. It was fascinating. We spent an hour reading and watching what was happening. I recommend this free tour.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 9, 2024
- aces11Nanaimo, Canada237 contributionsWell worth the visit! And it’s free!Excellent history and information on the American currency. Self-guided tour is easy to use and understand. Hands-on areas and an area above the minting floor for you to watch different stages of the minting process. Highly recommend this for kids and adults alike. Very educational!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 16, 2024
- Alex G7 contributionsWorth the free experienceIt's a fun place to go if you're interested in history. If you are willing to stand around and read, lots of informative information about the history of the US monetary system. It's all self guided and go at your own pace. No audio or tour guides. The security guards are rude and pushy, but besides that, it's worth the stop. And it FREE! It's also conveniently located near a lot of other attractions.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 9, 2024

Takes about an hour and whilst you can’t actually see the coins being made you can see the machinery and get a feel for the scale of production. Some interesting facts as you walk along the viewing platform. No photography allowed but it’s still an eye opener! Makes you look at your loose change in a differed light! Not allowed to take photos inside the mint! But very cool and informative venue. The “museum” here is awesome. It explains things we take for granted—it takes you through a step by step process of how coins are made. There are multiple examples you can touch along the way that clearly illustrate each step of the process.
You also get to walk above the mint, behind windows, and see coins being made at every step.
This is a free activity, but you must go through security, which is easy and hassle-free. Located near other historical sites, so easy to access by foot if you’re doing the tourist thing.
Please check the website before going, as city COVID infection rates affect whether or not the mint is open for tours.

It was a million degrees out, my kids were tired and cranky and we had been going since early that day. We wanted to stop by the mint though and glad we did. It was free, very cool inside, and a self guided tour, It was interesting and my kids got such a kick out if viewing the factory floor. It recharged us for the walk back to the hotel.

Super informative great experience! NO photos allowed, as it IS the US mint where all the coins are made. But can view down into the factory. Also a floor of history as well as history throughout the museum. Fantastic for families as well as a date.

This was a must see forc coin collector like myself. It is a self guided tour so you can take as much or as little time as you like.
My kids enjoyed watching the production facility from the catwalk, but my wife enjoyed our experience at the BEP in DC more.
There are a ton of exhibits and it was really interesting to see how coinage is produced.

Interesting tour of the Philadelphia mint wear our US coins are manufactured. You can look down into the production floor and see the machines and workers making pennies, dimes, nickels and quarters. A surprisingly good gift shop. The building is very large, so the tour is a long walk.

We will have our carry on luggage with us on a long layover in Philadelphia, can we bring them in with us?
Written November 10, 2019
Yes your luggage will go through security. I am not sure where you could leave it when you actually tour.
Written November 17, 2019
I understand cameras are not allowed but what if it is in my backpack and stays there will they still allow it? Walking all the way back to my hotel would be a hassle. Has this happened to you?
Written July 4, 2019
Just keep it in your backpack and don't try to sneak a photo.
Written July 20, 2019
They just make coins. There is a place in DC that prints outs the paper money.

Does anyone know if flash photography is allowed?
Written May 27, 2018
As I recall - NO photos are allowed at all!
Written May 28, 2018
Hayley, it depends on how fascinated or interested you are in the minting process. It is a self guided tour so you set your own pace. It will depend on others in your party, especially small children will not be amused. A quick visit would be 15 minutes, if you stop, watch, read all the information and stop at the store, an hour easily.
Enjoy

Is there a minting schedule available so that you can find out if coins will be being produced when you are visiting? Or, does anyone know if coins are minted on Saturdays? Or on Saturdays of holiday weekends?
Written September 24, 2016
They work around the clock. However, whether there is a lot of people working on the production floor or not will not impact the value of your visit.
Written October 8, 2016
I can't tell from their website, are tickets required?
Written August 23, 2016
No tickets, but when you go up you get in line and the adults show their photo id's and then the guard lets you in. Then you go through a metal detector and have to put all your belongings on a conveyor belt to be scanned.
Written August 23, 2016
I can't tell from their website, are tickets required?
Written August 23, 2016
No tickets required. If your schedule is flexible, keep an eye on their schedule as they do not operate the machinery 7 days a week. It's much more interesting if you go on a day they are working.
Written August 23, 2016
What's going on?! No photos allowed? I looked at the Internet Archive, and they still had that policy, even before 9/11. As of July 2015, the White House ended its photography ban, but should the Mint end theirs too (I mean at BOTH Denver and Philidelphia)? I think this rule is kinda outdated, because flash can be turned off.

Will the machines be running Friday, April 3rd?
Written March 27, 2015
You could try calling them at 1-800-872-6468 - it wasn't running when we were there but it's still interesting walking through it and seeing all of the machinery and the history of the facility. Have fun!
