Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse opened its doors in East Fairmount Park in 1899. Funded by Richard and Sarah Smith, the site was dedicated to the memory of their adult son, Stanfield. Smith’s beautiful, 24,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – 6 1/2 acres of open fields, wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment.Smith’s mission is to provide children 10 and under from diverse backgrounds with free and accessible one-of-a-kind play experiences that meet their physical, behavioral, and developmental needs.

This is an excellent option for a secure and safe playground for your children, during the winter months, only the indoor is open, but it provided a great location for our kids to run off some of their steam. There are three floors, with different themes to them and activities. I would say it is not up the standards of... More

Great place, off the beaten track, lots of space to spread out, explore, and play. A great playground with adjoining areas for younger and older kids, a large covered wooden slide, and a "mansion" to explore with different interest areas in unexpected places. Kids will love the wide open feel, plenty of space to run and play. it's also a... More

This was not at all what I was expecting. The playground actually consists of several play areas with a wide array of equipment and target age ranges. In addition to some typical equipment, Smith also features a large wooden slide, toy houses, saucer swings, ropes, bridges, and more. Some areas are nicely shaded. While the outside area was a lot of... More

This place is amazing! My kids had a blast. There is a lot to do here. It has a massive playground with a ton of different equipment that you don't usually see at a playground including an old wooden slide. The indoor part has a lot of things for kids to play with some of it is old and broken,... More

I never heard or knew of this place in all the years I've been visiting Philly. This is a great place for kids to play, not too far from the Zoo or from the Please Touch Museum. Paths are easily accessible with stroller, and there are different play areas for different ages. Parking in marked spaces can be taken up,... More

I had a party booked last year. I had to cancel. Since they wouldn't refund our money ($150), they told me we would have a credit on file with them for a year. Fast forward to today (about 8 or 9 months later), I have been trying to reach them via email and phone for two months now. I cannot... More

This is an outstanding place to take your kids if you're living or visiting the city. There are enough activities there to keep your tot active for a few hours, and tire them out before nap time.

I like the Franklin Institute, Please Touch Museum, and the other countless sites for kids in Philly....but my daughter has had the most fun at Smith Playground. You don't have to spend a lot of money to entertain your children here. They ask for a small donation but its not mandatory(please give if you can).

I am a father of two young daughters. They always have a lot of fun and there are toys that fit both of their age levels. The wooden slide is pretty unique and they really seem to try and add new things. It's free to enter, but they ask that you leave some kind of donation, which is understandable to... More

If you live in Philadelphia, put this on your "I'm out of ideas and it's cold out" list. But, if you're traveling, this is not a must stop attraction, even if it is historical. Inside there are two small run down rooms. Upstairs there is a pretend train and some toys that any daycare will have. Downstairs, there is a... More
