A must if you love history

I wasn't sure what to expect but it was an amazingly preserved colonial era home. The tour guide (I wish I remember her name) was wonderful! She had so many interesting stories... read more

I wasn't sure what to expect but it was an amazingly preserved colonial era home. The tour guide (I wish I remember her name) was wonderful! She had so many interesting stories and fun facts to tell and you could tell how interested she was in the house's history because she was so enthusiastic. My friend and I got a... More

This is an impressive piece of history that is over 300 years old. I was surprised to find that there was a famous Battle of Germantown between the British and Washington. This also tells a story of history regarding slavery in the U.S. and in the North. I never though there were slaves in the North and have a new... More

Cliveden (aka the Chew House) is the important site of a significant Revolutionary War battle known as the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777. The British had just taken over Philadelphia, and George Washington counter-attacked. Over 100 British army regulars were blockaded in this house and fought for hours from the impenetrable walls of this Georgian mansion. Bullet holes... More

It was wet. It was late in the season. We were the only two people there. None of this mattered to our docent Alex, who conducted us over the house and grounds - AND grounds! - with the same unflagging enthusiasm he'd have displayed if it were a high summer day with a full complement of tourists. No questions went... More

We spent the better part of 2 hrs15 min touring Cliveden and the grounds and would have needed at least 90 minutes additionally to peruse the visitors center. Ellen and Christine are excellent docents and we enjoyed our time immensely. Be sure to watch the brief video as an introduction prior to the tour and spend at least thirty minutes... More

I absolutely love my yearly visits to the Cliveden House. Being a teacher, I make sure that this is one of the sites that my students and I visit. The chaperones love it as much as my students. The guides, who are all knowledgable, share stories that make you feel like you were a part of the Battle of Germantown.... More

Arrived here early in afternoon from downtown Philly. Had e-mailed before hand and suggested we took train Chestnut East to Upsal- was a good recommendation. When we got to house it was quiet -only us in fact and young lady took us around carriage house and museum doing a great job of providing context to what we were seeing, answering... More

I was born and raised in Philadelphia and never visited this historic place. We went on a weekday and were the only visitors to this little known gem. It is off very busy Germantown Ave. in a quiet area of Mt. Airy. There is a visitors area in the old stable with displays and computer information about the house and... More

The Cliveden house tour was really fun! I loved the tour guide. I was fascinated by the very old trees. They have one that is 232 years old! The house was built in 1767 and i just love homes from that era. It's neat to know that most of the furniture and paintings are still in the same places as... More

Cliveden is my favorite historic house museum in Philadelphia. Unlike many house museums, Cliveden's furnishings are all original, including a gorgeous Chippendale-inspired couch. And the house itself is a beautiful example of Georgian architecture. But the coolest part about Cliveden is the story of its role in the Battle of Germantown. The house was actually used by the British as... More
