Tucked away next to the Philadelphia airport this is a hidden gem. Peaceful, beautiful and accessible. Great staff in the visitor's center. Real toilets! Visit any time of year and you will see wildlife. Bring a bicycle and ride the refuge. Observation tower and boardwalks make it easy to get close to the wildlife. Favorite spot to be in Philadelphia.

The Refuge has all sorts of wildlife...turtles, fish, red wing blackbirds, stick bugs. There's a building with educational displays about John Heinz and the wildlife residing. Also they show about ecology. There's a gift shop. But the best part is the walk! Very family friendly. Some people fish, but the fish are inedible, because water polluted.

Stopped here for a short walk in the woods. Easy access and plentiful parking. Beautiful fauna, trails are mostly well marked - but did some trail blazing in the higher grassy areas. Wear long pants to protect legs. The highway noise unfortunately reminds you that you're very close to civilization. Pleasant water front area as well.

I went on a nice rainy Monday and had the whole place to myself. It's flat, and mostly made-made surfaces on the trails, no no hiking shoes are required. One section is only 50 yards from I-95. So glad area residents saved this gem for us to enjoy now. A great place to run or birdwatch, especially if you're staying... More

Such a relaxing place with so many areas to sit, enjoy nature, and meditate! Also, so many turtles!! Just remember to do a body check for ticks (they're common here), and stay on the designated trail to avoid them.

Open early dawn to sunset. A beautiful spot right in the thick of things. Relaxing and if you love nature, a great place to go. We only walked a short distance but this park is very big. A lot of families there walking and many riding their bikes. Enjoyed it very much!

My colleague and I stopped at John Heinz refuge on our way to the airport. The refuge is daily opened from early morning till sunset. We took a taxi from downtown and went to the visitor´s center. The staff there is extremely helpful and very friendly and they even allowed us to let our luggage in their office so we... More

My family and I visited the wildlife refuge recently to hike the trails and photograph nature as we are avid amateur photographers. This is a beautiful natural resource in an otherwise urban area. The bird life and other wildlife was a joy to observe. The trails are relatively easy to navigate and there are handicapped accessible trails as well. There... More

We didn't know what to expect at any refuge during the hot summer months, so we were delighted that John Heinz turned out to be an excellent place for walks and birding. No insect bites to worry about. The walking path around the main water impoundment is about 3.5 miles. One side is the water impoundment and the other you... More

Have driven past this sign hundreds of times & never investigated. Found ourselves with about 90 minutes to kill prior to a flight at the airport. Didn't want to risk getting caught in traffic, but wanted to do something...this was great! Sunny day, free admission. This low key wildlife refuge is less than 10 minutes away from the airport via... More
