Tour our house, view our garden and feed our koi! Shofuso Japanese House...

Tour our house, view our garden and feed our koi! Shofuso Japanese House and Garden is a traditional-style Japanese house and nationally-ranked garden in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park that reflects the history of Japanese culture in Philadelphia, from the 1876 Centennial Exposition to the installation of its contemporary paintings in 2007.Shofuso was built in Japan in 1953 using traditional techniques and materials and exhibited in the courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was moved to Philadelphia in 1958, to the site of several previous Japanese structures dating to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. In 2007, internationally renowned artist Hiroshi Senju, inspired by our waterfall, donated 20 murals to Shofuso.A viewing garden with koi pond and island, a tea garden, and a courtyard garden comprise the 17th century-style Japanese walled and fenced garden of this historic site and museum.

This museum is just amazing, this Japanese house is very well maintained, and I've absolutely loved the guided tour. This is a real gem for the City of Philly, the only shame it is based on the edge of the city. A voyage though Japanese architecture absolutely fascinating!! It is definitely a must visit if you are nearby!

You can visit Shofuso in less than 30 minutes and see everything. But that's not the point. Shofuso is about relaxing and contemplation. If you expect to be loud and quick, do the rest of us a favor and stay away. The garden is small but exquisitely designed. The same applies to the "tea house." Take your time. Bring a... More

It's a nice place with a soothing environment. Gives a great pleasure for those who want some calmness and Japanese flavour. Take off your shoes when entering inside. Surrounded by a nice park. Those who have kids the Please touch museum is just round the corner. Must check the schedule, it's not open for the whole week.

Ok first of all this is $10 per person and it takes about 5 minutes to see the garden and the house. It is well taken care of, but its super small. its very pretty but again small. I was unprepared for the size.

$10 per person is too expensive. My teens like the koi fish and walking thru the house. Great spot to visit during the week when it's not crowded. It was too busy Easter weekend to enjoy the garden. The gardens appears to be much larger in photos then it really is. One distraction was the perimeter fence is iron, you... More

Other than the $10/person admission charge, the Japanese garden is definitely a not to miss site within the Philadelphia area. It's small, yet very nicely maintained. The cherry blossom around the garden make it so beautiful to just walk around the Fairmont Park.

We went there the day before the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival. The garden is tiny, as other reviewers have noted, but I think $10/ person is a ripoff. I'm from Japan, I've been to plenty of temples/ shrines/ gardens in Japan that would charge you as much, but the difference is that at Shofuso there's nothing to be seen. It's... More

I have been looking forward to visiting Shofuso during the Spring to enjoy the cherry blossoms. I was surprised with the amount of trees in bloom in Fairmount Park alone. The drive to the Japanese Garden was quite nice. The garden itself was a bit smaller than I had thought, but charming non the less. I found the garden to... More

Well worth a short visit to see this beautiful tea house, gardens and pond. It's very simple, as such buildings are, but great insight into this important part of Japanese culture.

This Japanese house is the center point of the cherry blossom festival. It houses an incredibly Japanese garden and pond, stocked with fish. You can only access it by paying to get into the house itself because the grounds are fenced.
