We love the South Mountain Reservation. There's a nice dog park, with separate fenced-in areas for big and small dogs. There are numerous hiking trails, with a waterfall as a nice destination, places to skate and cycle. A local treasure.

I signed up for a trail run and was absolutely amazed by the serenity and beauty of this nature reserve. The trail run was 10 miles and I actually walked a great deal of it due to the rocks and terrain. Very beautiful for a hike. Many trails, creeks, waterfall....

Took the grand kids here for a walk, picnic and watching the dogs romp in the dog park. No cars are allowed from the dog park area to the overlook, so its a good safe place for kids---but do watch out for bikers. Better than average, but not quite up to a rating of "very good"

The South Mountain Reservation can be a nearby respite from the day-to-day grind known as "life in Northern New Jersey." From here, one can hike in the former woodlot that once served the Oranges until the Industrial Age when coal became the fuel of choice. It's here, in these sacred woods, that a young asthmatic Theodore Roosevelt learned to appreciate... More

There is so much to do at South Mountain Reservation. The Turtleback Zoo, Mini-Golf Safari, Regatta Playground where you will find great rest rooms, Paddle Boating, Clipper Pavilion, Wildflower and Sculpture Park, Dog Park and hiking. When deciding to hike on of the many trails consider downloading a map of the Reservations hiking trails. Yes there are maps at the... More

I've been coming to the reservation for years, it's an oasis of green in a pretty congested area. Given the high population within 15 minute radius it's pretty quiet on the trails, which can are well managed, but busy on the main path at the top of the ridge. The views are ok over the city, when the leaves are... More

This is a beautiful area for hiking. You can easily spend 3 hours hiking around, exploring different areas, without covering the same area twice. Highlights include the overlook - a scenic view - and the falls - beautiful stream coming down different levels of rocks. Beautiful natural landscape and a bit hilly, so it's a good workout! Even with a... More
