The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is home to an internationally renowned collection of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Founded in 1914 with a single painting, the BMA today has 90,000 works of art-including the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world.* The museum is currently undergoing an unprecedented $28 million renovation to provide visitors with a more welcoming environment and more imaginative and inspiring encounters with art. The BMA is remaining open throughout the multi-year project so that visitors can enjoy its outstanding selection of European and American painting and sculpture from the 17th through 20th centuries and the newly reinstalled Contemporary Wing with 14 galleries showcasing the art of our time. Two beautifully landscaped gardens display an array of 20th-century sculpture that is an oasis in the city.

The museum's 100th anniversary will be celebrated in November 2014 with the reopening of the grand historic entrance designed by John Russell Pope and a beautiful new presentation of the museum's distinguished collection of American art. Subsequent reopenings include expanded galleries for the African and Asian art collections and a new learning and creativity center that will open in 2015. Since 2006, the BMA has eliminated general admission fees so that everyone can enjoy the power of art.

* Many of the BMA's works by Matisse are part of a special exhibition traveling to museums in Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and San Antonio in 2013 and 2014. If you are visiting to see a specific artwork, please call the BMA Box Office to make sure it will be on view.

Have been to Baltimore a number of times, but this was the first time I visited the BMA. What a nice surprise: beautifully designed building/complex with well curated exhibits. The Cone collection is an amazing trove of mainly impressionist art. Virtually every master of the late 19th & early 20th centuries is here (Renoir, Picasso, Matisse (several galleries devoted to... I've lived in the greater Baltimore area most of my life. It's probably been 25 years since we have visited the BMA. My wife and I love to travel and we're fortunate to have seen many wonderful museums all over the world. I was so impressed by the wide diversity of pieces that were displayed at the BMA. The best... It is amazing how many famous painters are represented in this museum. The fabulous collection is extensive. There is a great amount of impressionist art. Most notably the largest collection of Matisse's works are housed here. The contemporary art and old master collections should also not be missed. Best of all, the museum is free and uncrowded. Don't miss it.

If you have a spare 2 hours or so (or more, as desired), definitely make a visit to this beautiful, wonderfully managed art museum. Thanks to the beneficence of two sisters at the end of the 19th-century, this place sports an extensive exhibit of Matisse drawings and paintings. The galleries are beautifully appointed, and each area opens to a new... More

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is celebrating its 100th anniversary and continues to improve. It has completed renovations to its African and Asian collections and to the Amnerican art wing as well. The facilities for accommodating student groups have been modernized and expanded so that children and families can enjoy active art experiences. Of course, the world-famous Matisse collection... I've been to the BMA many times over the years, with my last visit five or six years ago. As a JHU alumnus I lived it it's back yard for a number of years. I enjoy visiting art museums all over the world, and make it a point to not compare them to each other. Each is unique with advantages... More

I thought it would be a good experience to take my daughters (ages 13 & 7) to the museum. Not really the best idea. First off here's construction in the area so here was very little parking available. Secondly, there were few things inside that interested my youngest daughter so she spent a good deal of time asking when we... More

I've visited the BMA more times than I remember. It has wonderful Special Exhibits, and an excellent collection of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts. The space is bright and clean and inviting. Fabulous gift shop and great restaurant.
