The basilica is noted to be the the first cathedral built in the U. S. Inside is very bright, peaceful with a large, impressive dome. It was being readied for a wedding when we were there, so we couldn't stay long, but worth a quick visit to see the inside.

The renovation around 10 years ago restored the cathedral to its original look from the 1820s,featuring clear glass windows letting in lots of light to the domed, brightly painted interior -- quite a change from the dark Victorian interior. The space is so beautiful and peaceful. We were lucky enough to have a tour of the crypt and museum areas... More

Hard to find with all the road construction-------very nice cathedral with wonderful ceiling mosaics---downstairs crypt is worth the visit, if nothing other than the bathrooms!

I stopped here for a quick confession and was moved by how absolutely pristine everything in the basilica is. It felt like an island of stillness in the middle of the city, and inspires a sense of reverence. The dome is also most impressive.

Absolutely beautiful architecture and a great refuge from the busyness of the city. It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL inside. Was really cool to be able to walk around so freely and see the basement and the history is amazing. Especially the catacombs beneath !

The first Roman Catholic cathedral in the nation, designed to resemble the U.S. Capitol. It is a relatively simple church, yet beautiful and peaceful. Visit and reflect, it will enrich your day.

I'd seen it pre-renovation and it looked old (obviously) and dark. I went there this spring and WOW! Amazingly well lit (LED's - nice green touch) bright paint and just plain immaculate. What a gorgeous place to get married.

What a great visit. The church is very beautiful and the historic side is what makes this cathedral worth visiting. Take the time to take a 1 hr. tour. The tour gives some really interesting information and our guide was even considerate enough to add some Canadian / British content. The restoration of the source was done very well. Worth... More
