A handful of people tried to make something here once, but it's mostly drunks, junkies, and indie hipsters. Judgemental liberals who hate whoevers not just like them. Overpriced eateries and bad tattoo shops. You're better off heading to Fells Point.

Hampden is touted as an arty neighborhood, with great restaurants. The restaurants are mediocre at best and the area is dirty and at night it is grungy, with people dragging their pit bulls and unattended children milling about. We had our car broken into and I didn't feel safe walking beyond the main street.

And, why is it called an art destination? Not one operative gallery, and the business owners have driven out the artists who used to have studios in the neighborhood.

Hampden is a wonderful neighborhood. The joy of Hampden is you can walk up and down the street, window shop, have a bit to eat, find a treasure, and experience a homegrown Main Street atmosphere.

Along the Avenue and its side streets there are many shops, restaurants, bars and galleries.

For free parking, go to Falls Road (adjacent to the Roosevelt Park) or Roland Avenue or Keswick Road. Hampden is not a circus or a freak show, it is a neighborhood with small locally owned businesses.

Things I like to do in Hampden...

Walk from Falls and 36th street to visit the shops and discover many, many more along your way. A nice little Italian deli with a splendid porch, a juice bar, Belgian beer, hand crafted jewelry, knitting enthusiasts will be drawn to Lovely Yarns, a flower shop, beaucoup antiques, you can even get your nails done...

Atomic Books for the latest in intellectual stimulation and diversion

Mud and Metal has an upstairs galley, is committed to showcasing local artists and artisans

13.5 serves up great cheese plates and yummy fried oysters.

Art House is known for its brick oven pizza.

Try the brussels spouts and burgers at the Golden West which after 10 pm is a hipster bar.

Souvlaki serves up a mighty tasty Greek salad, creamy hummus and grilled meat or veg pitas.

Have a Hon Salad at the Cafe Hon

Visit Bazaar on Chestnut for the extreme oddities and curiosities

The Charmery has yummy home made ice cream and is a year round treat

My coffee favorite is Spro.

The list is long of great shops. Yes, it is in the city. Yes, the neighborhood is popular and sometimes you have to park a block or two away, but not always.

This trip didn't start out well since we got stuck behind some woman selling heroin that had her buyer stop in the middle of the street and blocked traffic. Move beyond that, and it's impossible to find parking. The oyster tent was selling oysters to hipsters 6 for $10 even though it's buck-a-shuck in Fells. The crowd was insane. We constantly had people bumping into us, waiting in line to get down the street as people take selfies, and someone got arrested while we were there.

Yeah, the lights are cool, but considering my wife, kids, and mother had to witness blatant drug deals, people getting arrested, and everything else...just go to one of those drive through light places. I'll likely get roped into going next year since I wouldn't let my family go alone, but if I had my way I wouldn't go back.

We took a drive to see the Miracle on 34th Street. It is something we do every year. We were so happy to see not even a pandemic could stop the lighting of this iconic street in Hampden. The safest way to view it is in your car. We took a leisurely drive thru that gave us the opportunity to take some pictures.

Cool place to spend an afternoon. Great, local retail and restaurant choices. Would second the recommendation for the Charmery - amazing ice cream.

The Hamden neighborhood is worth a visit. Great inexpensive restaurants like Golden West Cafe, and wonderful shops like Milagro, that carries fair trade clothing and jewelry. Wine bars, coffee shops and antiques abound. So much fun!

I live within walking distance from Hampden- and I am very pleased for all the changes that Hampden has gone through over the past several years. It is one of the places to be in Baltimore now. With many eateries, historic homes converted to restaurants and businesses, a great wine store (Wine Source), many fun antique shops, yoga studio and much more. Having restaurants in an old historic house give you a much richer eating experience than other regular restaurants; they give you the feeling of eating in an exotic bed and breakfast place. It is fun to walk on the Avenue and watch people happily enjoying themselves- have a scoop of ice cream, or have a beer in a bar. Also, several times of the year, Hapmpden hosts different festivals and art shows. Importantly, new things keep pupping out begging you to go and check them out.

My wife and I are Baltimore natives and we both have found Hamden to be our favorite area for a night out both with friends or on spur of the moment. The restaurants are plentiful and offer a wide range of cuisines and vibes and some are BYOB! There is something for everyone and every desire. Parking can be a bit trying but several restaurants have valet. We strongly recommend Hampden for an enjoyable night out.

Hampden is slowly digressing and the walls are closing in from outside neighborhoods. Once a neighborhood that represented families and the working class is no more. In it's replacement, a handful of restaurants struggling to keep the neighborhood hype alive. Panhandlers are becoming very common in addition to the "We Buy Houses" signs often found in the poorer neighborhoods. These are the initial signs of distress and once the crime begins, people will flee inviting yet another ghetto in the decreasing population city of Baltimore.
