I have been going to Savannah 5 or 6 times a year for a decade. This bridge is a great backdrop for photos. But I go miles out of the way to avoid driving over it. I am phobic about bridges but there are quite a few I can drive on. This one combines steep with high. Quite a lot of cargo shipping under it so the possibility of a structural hit is high. I do wish someone in reviewing would describe number of lanes, how much buffer there is between lanes and railing. Those things could be helpful to the phobic among us.

I'm rating a bridge? really? Maybe the city will put up a walking path like every other city in the world does with large modern bridges.

Unbelievably scary for someone afraid of heights. Unfortunately we had to travel on it from our hotel in Mt. Pleasant to get into Charleston. We ended up switching hotel so we wouldn't have to go over it again.

OK, it sounds odd to suggest that you drive over a bridge just for the sake of driving over a bridge, but you should on this one -- I do it with every first-time visitor. The reason is that you get a great bird's-eye view of the city on one side, and the port on the other. The city view highlights one of the things that is so special about Savannah: the fact that its built to human scale. Zoning prohibits anything being built higher than the highest church steeple, and this drive will give you an appreciation of it that reinforces nicely what you experience in downtown walks. Plus, it's free!

When you want to visit Savannah by car the best view can be found using the Talmadge Memorial Bridge. You will find a great view of the City on the way into the city center.

I took photos at different times of the day and each shot was stunning especially when the huge cargo ships added to my shot. Drove over it first then enjoyed it from Riverside.

The Talmadge bridge is a no-cost way to get out of Savannah across the river to Hutchinson Island and South Carolina's low country. An excellent way to exit the city on an itinerary heading north.
I like to leave the downtown across the bridge -- which has no toll -- to park on Hutchinson Island in the middle of the Savannah River and look back at a stunning view of the river front. Fabulous at sunset.

To accommodate the taller ships and heavy car traffic, the old two lane bridge was replaced with a modern four lane structure. We did not encounter any traffic so it was a smooth two mile ride across.
Supposedly the removal of the old bridge cost more than building the new one. Go figure!
They did away with the tolls too...now that's progress!
No-one is complaining, I am sure...

pretty cool bridge. It looks a bit imposing as you approach from a distance but the grade is deceiving. It was a cool way to enter into our first glimpse of a great city.

I would not normally write a review of a bridge but this one is worthy of a few comments. This bridge is scary... The approach from SC to Georgia is quite intimidating. I'm almost always a bit uneasy going over bridges but the steepness of the incline of this bridge (especially when traveling into Savannah) was enough to make me a little quesy. I wish I could have enjoyed the view but I was too busy clenching the steering wheel (I think I bent a ring)!!! Second time over was behind a big semi which lost considerable speed as it was getting to the top (which was again, just a little unsettling). So go, enjoy the beauty...if you're not too busy staring at the car in front of you!

Why for the least the past three days in April it is bumper to bumper traffic coming from Savannah heading towards South Carolina no accidents no traffic lights get all of a sudden it is literally bumper to bumper both lanes coming off the bridge the moment you get off the bridge no traffic I would be curious what the reasoning behind this is nothing to justify that you can see people are driving crazy to avoid the traffic jam I've traveled this road many many many many times at the same time almost everyday hardly any traffic now you can't even get on the bridge first I thought it was a fluke but again for the flat past 3 days bumper to bumper traffic when you used to be two lanes coming off the bridge all the way to the South Carolina border never an issue again all of a sudden two lanes merge into one red rock

I really answered your question in my above statement and gave my review comments at the same time. So much for failure to read complete instructions before jumping in! Right?
