Don't waste your time on an 800 mile drive to see the entire Trans Alaskan pipeline (1600 miles if you include the return trip). Stop here and check out a few hundred feet of pipeline up close. (Spoiler: it pretty much looks the same along the entire length.)

Technically it is not a attraction but an engineering marvel.
Making the oil move from one part of the country to other that also during a time when technology was not at peak is quite an outstanding feat in itself.
It is a must visit

One of the stops on our journey was a viewing point of the Oil Pipe Line.
It was very interesting lesson about the line, its history and current data.
Beside whatever is on display, our tour guide told us more stories about how the line was build, how the permafrost affect the design of the line.
Because we were heading to the port of Valdez, the pipe line was "assisting" us to the very end.
I like this place and recommend to everybody going on this highway.

This is an outdoor viewpoint on Steese Highway. It is open 24 hours but there are no lights when it is dark. It is also a good viewpoint for the Aurora Borealis when they are out. The parking area is on both sides of the highway. There are few signs that explain about the pipeline and you can also see the pipeline above ground.

It is 9 miles away from Fairbanks, and it is free. If you have an extra 30 minutes, check it out. It's actually pretty educational, if you take the time to read the signs they provide! Even the teen found it a worthy stop.

It was a good little drive outside town but we were headed someplace else at the time that was in the same direction. It was neat to see the historic pipeline above ground and also a cut out piece so you can see the works on the inside and signs and photos explaining how it works and where it goes and the history behind it. There were also many amazing birch trees all around out there. It's worth the drive. I have a teenage grandson who has a learners permit and was just dying to try driving in Alaska so this was a perfect opportunity to accomplish that. It was a long straight road with little traffic and reasonable speed limits. He is excited to be able to say that he has actually driven in Alaska.

Engineering wonder. The Pipeline deserves a visit. I am sure you have heard about it, so if traveling here, do come to see it in person. The Pipeline was a gamechanger to Alaska’s economic development. After Fairbanks, we drove south to Valdez and had the opportunity to drive side by side to the pipeline for hundreds of miles. Go there. You will not be disappointed.

We visited around 1pm. It was not busy at all. It is free to visit, with a large parking lot. We were the only ones there for most of our visit. We had seen the pipeline and display at the Gold Dredge 8 facility the day before, but that was with bus loads of people around. Today we had a rental car and were able to visit without all of the people, and to take our time. This display is a couple miles north of town, just off the Steele highway. And just a short bit north of that, and on the west side of the road, is the Gold Dredge 8 facility. We had a very nice visit. It is fascinating. If in the area again, I would stop and revisit.

I would never think of visiting an oil pipeline for fun... but it was! It's really interesting to read about how the pipeline works and stays safe. I didn't really understand all of that prior to my visit. It's also cool to see the actual footprint of the pipeline. This is a totally free stop off the side of the road, open to anyone. Definitely stop by on your way to your other activities.

If you are driving by this viewing point, it is worth stopping. I would not recommend going out of your way to visit it. If you are heading to the arctic, you will see plenty of the pipeline. The stop has some information about the pipeline. Basically, it is a viewing point where you can get next to the pipeline easily.

24/7. It's on a pullout off the Steese Hwy, north of Fairbanks. Park your car, walk across a small bridge & there is the pipeline, along with signs that explain the history, etc. Can be seen from the road & accessed all the time. There is no enclosed building.
There's an exhibit about the pipeline in the Museum of the North at the Univ. of AK at Fairbanks. That site and the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center are both excellent sources of information about AK & Fairbanks.
